Me and a buddy are putting in a new food plot. We have somce clover chicory and turnip mix in already and were looking to put in corn and soy beans however we can only find soybeans in an affordable mixture. The farming fields around us are all corn so is it a big problem for us to not put in corn this year or the following? Will the previously mentioned mixture be good enough for a food plot in this type of area or are there other plants we should look into adding next season?
If theres nothing but corn all around you then DONT plant corn, do a green on green ..... Plant some clover & soybeans... do a 50/50 first part clover then the second half beans. Once the beans go brown then you will still have a green clover plot. If you already have the mixture planted then just plant the other half in beans but you can afford to plant them a little late so they are still green into season. Keep in mind you want to plant them semi close to your "killing tree" or make it so your killing tree is on the divider of the plots.
I agree with rutin, plant something out of the ordinary and you will be surprised of the visitors you will get checking out the new food sources!
We already have some deer walking near the field we are planting so we have a general idea where they are going to be coming from. I have heard that you set an ambush on the way to the food plot and not actually hunt over them. is there any validity to this? We are planting a U shaped area of soy beans around the outside of a clover middle so hopefully that will work okay. thanks for the input.
Yea... you can setup over the plot or in a transition area. If the buck your targeting isnt coming to the plot til after dark, then you need to figure out where he is coming from and cut him off and hunt in the transition area. The hardest part of hunting over a plot is getting out without getting busted by every deer in there.
beauty of the field is its a U with most paths traveling towards where i would be setting a stand. pretty sure i could cut a path back to a stand with crossing maybe 2 seldomly used paths. getting a stand set up for a different wind position might be a little bit more difficult. as i have to cross a third active trail and maybe a 4th
I would do like the others said and plant clover and forage soybeans for the first part of the year then go over it with rape and turnips for the later part of the year.
