When you are planting a food plot when do you fertilize your soil.

I know to get a soil sample.

Cut the area down with a brush hog

Spray the area with Round-up or equivalent, let the weeds die and follow up and spot spray remaining areas

Work the soil with a disc and drag

    Now what....

    A. Do you fertilize the soil before you seed? If so how much time after you fertilize do you plant?
    B. Do you fertilize the soil the same day you plant the seed?
    C. Do you fertilize the soil after you seed? If so how long after planting do you fertilize?

Thank in advance for the responses

Fertilize your plot the same day you seed. If possible roll or drag your seed and fertilizer into the soil just a little so that you are able to get good soil contact with the seed. After that let mother nature do the rest! Good Luck!

Spray, till, then spray again. Then spread fert and lightly drag into soil, then seed.

I want my fertilizer where my plants are..........in the top 1 inch of soil. Working fertilizer any deeper then that is useless in my opinion. We throw our fert out just like our seed and then roll it all together and we have always had EXCELLENT results.

I use B and C, depending on what I planted. Same day seed/fert on most stuff, but on my turnips I like to go back a month after growth has started and broad cast some urea right before or during a rain. Gives an extra shot of Nitrogen

Don't most of your plants roots go well beyond 1 inch below soil surface?

I also broadcast some fertilizer when the plants are a few inches tall before a rain.

Keep us updated and post up some pictures if you get a chance.

Thanks Jake. You gave me some tips last year but I didn't fertilize and it was dry as hell so I didn't get much of a plot last year. I'm going to give it another go this year with fertilizer and what seems like a better year as far as heat and moisture.

Good call Jake. I went out and mowed my clover plots and spread fertilizer on the clover and soybeans before the rain yesterday. Couldn't ask for better timing.
