Looks like someone had fun :) Keep us updated!

Me personally in picture #2, I would have cut down a few more trees.

This was the result after cutting down trees, digging out the roots and rocks, getting stuck in bobcat a handful of times, and then finally harley raking the whole area. Saved so much time rather than using a walk behind roto tiller. Next step get most of the little roots out with loppers and then fine raking it. Then liming and fertilizing. And finally planting hopefully next weekend.

Ya a walk behind tiller would be brutal. Trust me I know as that is what I use for a few of my small plots.
The harley rake does a nice job and it sounds like you gave that bobcat good workout :)

My take on trees in the plot is they are stealing light needed to get down to the ground and also sucking up nutrients in the soil.

    Keep us updated.

More light the better I think. I tried planting damn near everything on a filtered sunlight logging trail on top of our hill. Gave up after 2 years. If planted right away in the spring before the leaves were on the trees the stuff came in good, but as the canopy filled in the plants died off.

Light important yes. But trees take up water - a lot of water! So any rain that you do get will get sucked into the roots of the trees and will make it hard for vegetation to grow around the trees. Now it might grow, but it won't be as healthy of a crop as you will find in other places.

Looks like sunlight could be an issue also. For the same reasons that "fields edges" have limited plant growth. Good luck - looks like you've put in some good work. Let us know how it turns out.

    What are you planting?

Looking good so far! Like some of the others have said about the trees, it's difficult to get a good planting with shade and all but it's also worth a shot. If it doesn't work like you hope then next year you can take a few more out.

Only problem with taking down more trees is its not my land I will see how it goes this year. I did the same area last year and it came in decent I did whitetail institute clover and secret spot. But I have taken down close to 20 more trees this year. The deer around here have adapted to eating regular gardens fruits and veggies so ongoing to do a regular garden to see what they like the best sort of a test plot then surround it with clover. They really liked the clover last year but they really hit my lettuce and zucchini last year. I'm also planting turnips and every other vegetable you could think of just to see what they prefer. I plan on planting this weekend.

Here are some pics from last year to see the progress.

Ya you got stuff to grow there in the past and it gets some sun. This year should be a little better like you said. Plus not being your land you are limited I agree.

Good idea to mix it up and see what they like. Also a little seclusion cage is nice to have to see what is what.

Good luck, thanks or sharing and keep us updated.!

Feeble attempt to keep deer off till It grows. Keep the laughing to a dull roar !!!! I'm thinking of spraying the tape with ammonia.

that is a interesting way to keep deer out! That would scare off a trespasser too! If they walk up on all that crime tape I can see them running back through the woods the way they came :)

    Keep us updated.
