I'm trying something new this year, that I have wanted to do for awhile. A bit of backgound first. On our farm there is an old hog pasture about 3 or so acres in size. This stuff has grown up thicker than thick over the years and a lot of good bucks have called it home (most recently a buck named Cecil my dad shot in '15 the next ridge over). To aid the deer travel, I have mowed a path in the past down the middle, moved brush around to deter alternate routes, and cut openings in old barb wire fences. The pasture is seperated from a large ag field by an old fence row with mature trees and brush in it. A perfect natural screen. The plan now is to plant a small food source down the length of this spot. Last night I took the mower in and cleared some ground and I'll spray tomorrow. I have a stand in the fence row, and cleared a 15 yd x 25 yd spot within range of my stand. The "road" then winds the ridge top back and ends where a rectangle 30 yd by 40 yd spot was cleared. I have a stand here as well, but access is a huge concern here so I need perfect conditions and a dang good reason to go in there. My hope here, is that the "road" will provide the deer with a natural path and food source as they work their way in/out of the large ag field. With the thick brush all around and the woods surrounding it being logged, I'm hoping one of the good bucks I have on camera will take a liking to it. I'll be planting white clover and mixing it with rye and oats this fall. I'll try to keep this posted with pictures as it progresses. Sent from my LGLS992 using Tapatalk
Sounds like a good plan. My advice would be give the bucks the befit to the prodominat wind in the area. So they feel comfortable leaving bedding to road food plot. Then set your stand just on the edge of the scent cone. The other thing is just go in all or nothing sit. Wait til you know the buck your after is using it and hunt right away and plan to kill him that night. Sounds like it could be a killer spot!
Both of those tactics are in use actually! The field edge stand is great for ease of access, and can be hunted with any S wind. The stand in the back though is an all or nothing sit. When I hunt there, I am looking for a north to northwest wind and want to be in there early and have a strong wind or rain to cover my sound. It's an all day sit and I usually only go there once a year. Sent from my LGLS992 using Tapatalk
