The timber that neighbors our hunting ground is being logged. While they are down there we are going to have them come onto our ground and clear a food plot for us. It will be right in the middle of about 60 acres of our timber, which is part of a huge tract of timber. I'm looking for some ideas on recommended size and layout. We have everything needed to work the food plot once it's cleared so whether it's 1/4 acre or 2 acres is no big deal. I was thinking about an L shaped plot. The ground may flood at times.

I like the idea of an "L" shape. Reason being there are more inside corners for the deer which can help funnel them, making it easier for you to hang in a certain spot & hunt vs. just cutting out a blob/ circle which would make the deer movement unpredictable. Those are just my thoughts, good luck!

I like an hour glass shape. It creates a natural pinch point in the middle. If its built right with the prevailing winds in mind that will be a killer spot.

A hunting buddy of mine has a "T" shaped food plot and at the bottom of the T it feeds out into a large bean field. So he has planted a mix between clover, turnips and something else the past two years and it has worked out pretty well for him. Obviously they funnel into the bottom part of the T and head out into the fields to feed on the beans.

The other thing I like about the "T" is it makes a natural pinch point in the food plot and if it's not too wide then you can hunt one of the corners. Just a thought.

I don't care what shape my plots are because I won't plant one over approx 1/2 acre in size so if hunting over it you're shooting anything entering the plot. I believe in small plots with as thick of cover surrounding them as possibly, make deer feel safe while on the plot. Larger fields I consider destination plots and don't expect mature deer to enter them during daylight hours very often.
