Let me start by saying I'm a meat hunter, always have been and probably always will be. I guess I learned it from my late father. Other than the Mulie I shot in WY, I ate tag soup here in Ohio last year but not because I didn't try, hell, I hunted more last year than ever in the past but just never got an opportunity. In the back of my mind I've often told myself that I thought it would be cool to shoot a deer on the very first hunt of the season. Well, mission accomplished and yes, it has a cool factor to it. Heck, I don't generally start hunting until the 3rd week or so of Oct. but since I'm not working and all... After a couple hours in the stand and having seen nothing, I look off to my left and see a buck checking his boundry scrapes about 300 yards away in a different farmers field. I remebered that on the way to me stand I passed 3 freshly pawed at scrapes on my uncles land where I hunt. After I see him get done I noticed he was meandering the way of my unlces land so at this point I asked myself, I wonder if I could get down and make it over to those other scrapes in time to head him off. Well since I thought I could outsmart him, I got about 100 yards from my stand and as I'm walking the edge of the bean field I look to where the scrapes are and I see him, he's standing on his hind legs licking braches and such. At this point I duck into the fence row to try to figure out what, if anything, I could do. I'm telling myself that it was game over and perhaps I should set a ground blind up next to the scrapes and see if I could get him another time. So after about 10 minutes of waiting I didn't see him anymore so I figured he'd gone about his buisness and thought I would too. It's nearing dusk so I start back to the truck and when I got to within 100 yards or so of where I last saw him I heard him blow and at this time he was only about 10 yards from me on the other side of a tree in the fence row. I saw him bound off a little but he didn't go far. After I saw where he stopped I ducked down to hind behind the weeds that were between him and I. I could see that he didn't go far so I knocked an arrow and hoped he was still there when I stood up. I stand up and he was still in the same spot, staring at me broadside but slightly quartering towards me. I drew back, and judged him for 30 yards. I had to make a minor adjustment to clear a couple weeds that were in the way. After I touched off the arrow all I heard was thump and saw him kick. He ran off, made a couple big leaps and after about 20 yards he fell, then got up and went maybe another 10 yards before he went down and never got back up. That's when the texting began... I later found my Rage 2 blade tipped arrow laying about 15 yards past where I shot him... He's looks to have some messed up genetics however it does look like he had the starty of a drop tine on the right side.
Now that was an exciting story congrats!! That was awesome. Man it looks like you through an axe through him :D
