Anyone fly fish? Ive been slowly getting into Fly fishing/tying and want to build a desk for tying the flies.

Could you post a picture of the set up you have?

Im just trying to get an idea of what the desk will look like and what I need. Thanks.

I had a fold out desk that I used to tie off off...thing was despite all the draws ect it was always a mess. Second problem was that each September thu march depending on the week I would pack most everything up and take it to our steelhead camp.... I came up with a solution... Even my wife was happy. I bought two of these cases from Fish Pond, one I have everything I use for tying Steelhead and Salmon flies and the other has everything else for Dry flies ect ect. Thing about it I usually tie at my desk or on the table in our den at home...this forces me to put it all away after I am done. The case holds as much or more then a good size desk and its better organized...My desk was alway left a mess... In any event it was an excuse to have two vices....

My desk is a mess of materials, but I can tell you a few important things to consider.

    1. Make sure your comfortable. The keys to this is the height of your vise, how close you sit, and your chair.

    2. Lighting.

    3. Storage. You can never have too much storage.

What he said ... PLUS... a place for a slug like me to watch you tie my flies. LOL I just got into fly fishing about 5 years ago. My brother has been in it for ... hell, multiple decades. He ties all my flies. He enjoys it. He also has a portable bench he carries to fish camp and during travel. I buy materials... he makes the flies. It's a good symbiotic relationship. LOL At my age... I see no need for me to spend all the money on vises etc etc etc when I have a brother just down the hill. LOL While at fish camp he ties flies for all the guys... anywhere from 6 to 10 of us. When we went to Alaska he taught me how to tie a couple easy flies. He was working then. I'd tie 15-20 flies at a time. We tied flies for weeks for the 9 guys going. Usually just yarn flies, flesh flies and egg sucking leeches or something for salmon. They worked.... but then...just about anything works in Alaska.

Storage is key like Vito said along with lighting. I have a small tower of plastic bins stored under my computer desk with my vise and light on it. I have a big computer desk and I like having it set-up there so I can look up new patterns and not have to run back and forth between 2 desks.
