Hey guys I’m looking for some help. I’m thinking about getting into fly fishing this spring. I’ve done some research and I’m trying to learn what I can about this new side of fishing but I like to hear what people have to offer rather than read a article. But I’m not sure what brands to look at or stay away from. Along with rod and reel sizes. I’d mainly be fishing for trout and smallies in streams and and smaller rivers. Any advice you guys could give me would greatly appreciated. Thanks Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Lots of good rod/reel combos for beginners. If only buying one rod I'd look at a 8.5 or 9 foot 5/6 weight rod for a trout and smallie combo. You don't want to be under-roded on bass becuase you'll generally throw bigger flies for them, but also want a rod you can fish smaller flies for trout with. If you have a fly shop or orvis nearby go there and talk to them. I can't think of a brand off the top of my head to stear clear of but with fly rods you generally get what you pay for with a few exceptions. Me personally, I have 4 and 5 weight orvis rods I use for trout. I throw an old Cabela's 7 weight for bass.
Yeah I’d probably get a combo to start. I was going to ask about cabelas brand. Since they have a decent amount of combos it looked like. You confirmed what I had in mind as far as sizing. With a 9 foot and 5 or 6 weight. Another big thing is line. I’m struggling to understand all the different types and when to use them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Could you get a rod and reel for say 6 weight line and the have a secondary reel with a lesser weight? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I remember him talking about fly fishing in the past but I wasn’t sure if he was still active around here. I’m still working on a musky on a bait caster lol I’ll start out small for fly fishing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'll see if I can get my boss to make me a few extra jigs that I have snapped you pics of and send you a couple.
Sh!t I forgot about that lol that would be awesome. I’ll shoot you a message. Lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I’ve read it’s weight forward or double taper. What’s your reason for the one over the other? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
#1 didn't know there is a season for catching flies ! #2 what does one use to catch flies ? Poop on a hook ? #3 what size line does one use to catch flies ? How do you fix flies so as to be edible ? #4 are they a warm water or cold water species ?
It can be addictive. I live on the Mississippi in Sartell Mn and took it up last year and I,m hooked. There are a ton of helpful informational articles on line that can answer most all of your questions as well as excellent informational videos on YouTube from the industry manufacturers and reputable figures in the industry on everything from equipment to technique casting etc... Check out flyfisherman.com many helpful articles there as well. Word of advice practice casting technique on dry land (open city park are works well) and develop repeatable technique going for short to moderate distance accuracy first and after you have accomplished that then start to work on distance you be much more successful and catch more fish in the long run if you do. The Cabelas equipment is as good as anything else and better than some unless you get into the really high end stuff and then some of it is just paying for a name and or the average guy would never be able to detect the improve nuances in the high end equipment over moderate priced gear. Happy casting. Doug K.
I second hitting up Vito. He would be a great resource. I’m still pretty new to it myself. I started out with an 8’6” 5wt Cabelas Rod. Still have it, but now have an Allen 9’ 5wt. This is a pretty well rounded setup for all but the smaller brookie streams, and of course, the bigger sport fish. You definitely get what you pay for and a good local fly shop is a good spot to start. Be careful, it can be addicting
Love to fly fish, used to go to Scotland salmon fishing when I was a kid, now I live in Florida I’m frequently down in the Keys fly fishing. Good luck and the others are correct, it’s very addictive!
I was looking at some of the cabelas setups. I came across a st croix rio santo outfit that looks like a good package to start. The only thing I’m not sure of would be the reel and line it comes with. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
