Here in RI we are not allowed to wear anything but orange. My question is; what is the big deal about fluorescent camo, pink or green? I do not understand what the issue is with some folks really wanting the option. I mean the deer don't care. You are not going to win any fashion awards. Other hunters don't care. So what is the attraction for this? I'm really trying to understand because I am currently attempting to decide whether to push this concept to our state staff and my heart really isn't in it. I'm looking for some guidance here. Thanks! Smitty
Wisconsin approved for people to hunt with Blaze Pink. I think it wasn't because people are wanting options, I think the DNR are giving new hunters options. This is most likely targeted towards young female hunters who like wearing pink. The DNR in our state is doing a lot to increase the number of new hunters because the tag purchases are trending to decline.
I'm confused. You have to wear blaze orange during archery season? And right now it's illegal to wear blaze "camo"?
I have not idea. I like that there is one standard color so you absolutely know if you see hunter orange, there are hunters around. There's no questions.
Justin - Yeah, we have to wear blaze orange during muzzle loader season to and from our stands and shotgun season all the time. And yes, camo orange does not meet the legal requirements for any hunting in RI.
I guarantee you can't see that light pink color half as well as blaze orange from a couple hundred yards away. And the thought of allowing green is mind-boggling when you think of the purpose of wearing blaze. Someone is going to get shot.
I don't know your rules. WI as already stated allowed Blaze Pink, it is not the same pick as you have seen in camo clothes targeted towards woman. It appears just as noticeable at Orange. Wi law is 50% of your upper body, and hat if worn, need to be in Blaze. This is during rifle season and during the youth hunts.
Colorado is allowing Blaze Pink this year. Archers only have to wear it if there is a firearms season open. Camouflage pink or orange doesn't satisfy the blaze requirement.
Amazingly CA is one state that does NOT require blaze colored anything during any season. And I will add this is in the deer zones I hunt in and may not apply state wide but find it hard to believe it's only limited to certain zones in my state. Personally when hunting, I am absolutely 100% sure of what my target is before pulling a trigger on my rifle or bow AND can see the target when shooting. I believe most hunting "accidents" of this nature can be eliminated with people paying attention. If you can't tell your target is a deer or turkey or whatever animal you are hunting, you have no business being in the woods with a deadly weapon; plain and simple.
The blaze laws also came about from people who were sure of their target at a distance, but with a miss or a pass-through hit someone else beyond that could have been visible but just blended in. It adds a layer of safety and in most instances isn't a detriment to the hunt. The caviot to that is the bow hunter. At close range it reduces the ability to breakup the outline. However, I can deal with that for the short duration I have to, during open firearms seasons. Their are a lot of idiots that go out and do stupid and illegal things, and I like being able to say I did everything I could to prevent it.
So what I am getting here is that safety is the key element here (as it should be). Does anyone have any data that confirms the safety of these new blaze colors? Thanks for the responses guys! It is appreciated.
As more stored energy weapons are included during a time bowhuinting is taking place, more bowhunters will have to wear blaze colors.
It seems to me, deer don't care what color you are wearing, as long as you don't look like one huge Blob of a single color. I would think a camo pattern mixed of Blaze Orange, Blaze Pink and the most visible Blaze Lime, would be the best bet for both safety and hiding from the deer.
