Jill and I are talking about taking the kids to Florida this year right after Christmas for a week. The kids will be just turning 5 and 8. We're not looking at Disney. I don't know what the temps are like down there that time of year, but we would like to spend some time at the beach and be by the ocean. Any suggestions on where we should go? Oh, we'd prefer to rent via VRBO and take in the local scene, no interest in resorts.
We like Anna Maria island quite a bit...been down there a bunch as her uncle lives near there in Bradenton beach...plenty of beach houses to rent and it's not the hustle and bustle of the main tourist locations...it's about 30 40 minutes away from Tampa if I remember right We usually go in Feb if we go and I'll tell you the past few years we've been down it has been 50 to 60...with wind it does get quite chilly on the beach at those temps... I went to Destin Florida on spring break with a family friend and his family back in high school and we took their RV. We stayed at a beach front RV park and it was awesome. If you have an RV or access to one to borrow I would highly recommend it.
Yeah, I realize the timing isn't the greatest for weather, but no way to go later because Jill is an accountant and gets too busy.
I have a condo in Clearwater which is near Tampa bay and I would suggest you go down there. Its not as family oriented as it was 6 years ago, but still has a good feel to it. Down town Clearwater is just an awesome small town feeling place, even though its a city. Temps are usually in the Can be anywhere from 60's to 80's but normally 60's-70's.
I too have the same problem as my wife is a CPA. We are looking at a October trip. I think if you want really warm weather you may have to head to Mexico. We are looking at a trip right now that is all inclusive that seems to good to pass up. Although I believe it is during the beginning of hurricane season.
It will be too cold anywhere in the panhandle. You will have to go the the Keys for any kind of half way decent beach weather. I've never been to the Keys, but I know it is the spot for old gays to retire. My wife's uncle and his partner just bought a badass beach house down there, so we will probably go next summer sometime.
That time of year isn't going to be good for beach. Weather is too unpredictable and the water will be cold. Might have some luck in the southern most parts. It is a good time for theme parks but you don't seem to be interested in that. Might look into parks like silver springs and such. They are nice quiet gettaways with glass bottom boats. We went to san diego a few years ago and loved it. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk
I went to Kennedy when I was 9 and still remember it as one of the most fun things I did as a kid. To me, this is a must stop. https://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/?_ga=1.193497515.780870813.1386919009
I'd strongly consider southern CA or the Carribean instead if warm weather and beach is what you are looking for. I'm in the process of opening a new office in Orange County and have been out there a lot the last couple of months and it seems to be a lot warmer there than Florida during the winter. As tfox mentioned, San Diego is beautiful and likely less $$$ than something in the carribean.
Yeah, it sucks that that's about the only time we can go. We were talking about the northern keys, in hopes that it may be warmer there. I don't know that I want to take my kids to Mexico at that age. We would also talked about the Bahamas, but would want 10-14 days there and that won't be this year. This sucks because her being a CPA she's busy from mid January to mid August with a little bit of slow time in between. I'm busy from early May until late October, so we're really limited as to when we can go.
I went to the keys, met a nice gal down their I have only went to the Keys and Disneyland, so I cannot help My kids were 9 and 5 The keys can be a bit different, if you head all the way to the end.
First place that popped into my mind is So Cal for that time of year. I think winter out there has an average of like 70 degrees... I may be off a touch as I recall this from Geography classes in the late 90's...
