My wife and I usually start planning our summer vacation around this time of year to ensure good prices, availability, and flight options. Since we were married 4.5 years ago, we've done the Bahamas, Dominican, Nags Head, and last summer, we did an Eastern Caribbean cruise. My wife wants to try Mexico this time due to prices, resort quality, etc., While I don't share her enthusiasm, I can see the point. However, due to a few dietary restrictions I'm under right now, an all inclusive in Mexico MAY not be the best option for me. So, my only plan of attack is to offer up a seemingly equal, more domestic, option:D My first thought were the Keys. I've never been there, but I've heard it's very nice, and about as much of an Island feel you can get in the US, minus Hawaii. So, I'm looking for recommendations. I've already started searching, and yes there are plenty of sites I'll use to research, etc., but I would like some opinions from people I trust a bit more (some of you anyway :D). Anyone who has been to the Keys have a recommendation for two adults looking to relax for a week? Ideally, a place with little to no children activity at the "resort" or hotel.
I loved the keys, I met a speacial someone down there, there is a picture here somewhere. I PM my cell to you, if you want to know I will tell you.
We stayed in Marathon and had a good time. It's a little quieter than some of the other Keys, especially Key West. I literally lasted about 20 minutes down there and I was ready to get out. Marathon is pretty much right in the middle, so you can get anywhere in an hour or so. I did some reef fishing which was a good time and pretty inexpensive. The Keys Fishery was awesome, great food and cool atmosphere. You can feed the Tarpon right from the covered dining area. There was also this bar that the locals recommended to us for lunch one day. It was great, I got a half a slab of ribs and sides for $5.00. They also have a really cool Lego display of the South Beach strip in Miami. We went down south to Big Pine Key and did some hiking which was cool, and we were able to see some of the key deer(their own subspecies that is endangered). It was a fun trip.
I have spent a fair amount of time in the keys. Can you elaborate on what you are expecting/want from the vacation? What type of activities yuall do on vacation? Do you want a resort with amenities? Relaxin by the pool/beach? DIY relaxing in a B&B/rental house/cabin/camping & fishing? Based on your previous vacations I suspect your wife likes to be taken care of... Regardless of what you want out of it the keys has it all to offer...
I think we're aiming more towards relaxing on the beach. Drinking/eating. Walking around at night, balcony in the evening, or walking along the beach at night. We're a more laid back couple for our age (i.e. we act old :D).
Its too dang hot down there durng the summer!!! We do a backcountry camping.fishing trip through the lower keys in late march/early april.
