Greenheads down in eastern nc. If you get down into some of the marshy/swampy areas down in the Pamlico sound, OBX, and lake Mattamuskeet areas on a day without a lot of wind then they’ll outnumber the mosquitos 2-1. Their bites hurt more than any wasp, hornet, or yellow jacket sting I’ve ever gotten and unlike bees, they go out and actively try to search for and bite you instead of only attacking if you f’ed with them or their nest. I guess on the bright side the pain does go away a lot quicker than a wasp sting and when they do attack the greenheads tend to go with the strategy of making multiple small attacks every few minutes and spread out over the course of a day instead of sending the entire nest out to sting you all at once like hornets tend to do. We were out wandering Bogue Bank and just off the beach got into green heads. Not sure if they hurt more than deer flies, bees, etc. But they stuck. The problem with black flies is twofold: 1) their bites take divots out of your skin (not a sting) 2) density. Just about every year somebody 'goes missing' in the Daks during spring time, greatly due to the black flies. Sent from my SM-G960U1 using Tapatalk
