I saw Columbia launch in person on STS-93 (not the accident flight) when I was in 6th grade. I’d begged my parents for like two years to take me to a space shuttle launch and they finally pulled through. We went down to Florida. Got all ready and like 10 seconds before launch they cancelled it. They rescheduled it for 3 days later and I was so bummed that my parents called in a few extra vacation days, rescheduled our flights and we stayed in Florida for an extra 3 days. Second time was the charm. It was the most spectacular thing I’ve ever seen to this day. It’s impossible to describe the sound. You feel it more than you hear it. The sound in real life is nothing like what you hear watching one on a video.
I’ve seen a delta heavy and a falcon launch as well and both were also amazing, but the shuttle was something else.

I still remember being glued to the TV when Columbia went down. That was a real tragedy, especially because (much like challenger) the folks at NASA ignored numerous red flags ahead of time and should have prevented it before it ever happened.

What did you do with the recovery?

Back in october I’d have done that if I’d known it was an option but now that I’ve gone shoulder deep a few times I’ll probably stick with that. It would take me longer to go pick up the bull than to corral them into the head gate and put on the shoulder gloves. At least until I’ve got more than the current 3 plus however many heifers I get from them.

I will attest that beaver tail roasted over an open campfire is delicious. That’s the only cut of meat I’ve ever tried from a beaver but I imagine the rest if pretty good too. I’ve eaten a lot of Land Beavers (aka groundhog/whistle pig/marmot/tunnel possum) and they really are a delicacy and extremely unappreciated meat. Never tried a muskrat though. I once shot a nutria, which I think is kind of like a muskrat, but I couldn’t bring myself to eat it. In hindsight I wish I would’ve just so I would know if they were any good. I’ve always wanted to try penguin too. Kind of just out of curiosity because I have always wondered whether they would taste more like a fish or a bird/foul. Doubt I’ll ever get a chance though, they are highly protected.

I move to Texas to work security at NASA-JSC/Clear Lake/Houston in the 80's... a USMC buddies dad worked in Quality Control there and helped me get in. ... I was at a different post when the Challenger went down/Jan. 1986 .. was a shock to all, not to mention the heart break ....

They took fire crews because we know how to grid use maps work in crappy conditions. We got maps in the mornings and all day long we gridded sections of land searching for parts. It was very locked down the maps we were give were a quality I had never seen in detail, we also had to turn them in at the end of the shift. 18 days near corsacana texas.

That isn't easy to do with 0 pressure, add in fire suppression and that is really tough.

I figured you did something else for a living. I have a little bit of physics knowledge but it is limited to the field of Kinesiology and Human Performance. Your grasp on physics is definitely a few steps above mine.
