Depends on a lot of things. What kind of rest do you have. If whisker biscuit style then straight if drop away fletch them both and shoot them to see which groups better.
I shoot a drop away. I was going to buy a cheap bohning fletching jig to start out so I think I will just get a right helical and if I can't get them to fly good I'll just go back to 3 vanes.
What kind of vanes? I have shot 2 inch razor feather fletching straight fletch with 4 fletch with good luck. Why do you want to shot 4 fletch?
I was checking out Tim Gillinghams hunting setup and saw that he uses VaneTec 2.3'' Super-Spine vanes. The main reason I want to shoot 4 fletchings is because I'm going to switch to a backtension release and when I start practicing with it I'm going to turn my poundage down about 10lbs and my arrow will be to stiff. I don't feel like buying a new set of arrows that I will never shoot again. The 4 vanes will give more forgiveness for the stiff shaft. I'm going to add more point weight to compensate for the extra vane and another reason, it will give better stabilization for fixed blade broadheads.
Same here. I started shooting right helical this and I my groups are the tightest they have ever been.
I've used the same arrows with right helical and 100 grain broadheads on bows ranging in poundage from 40-65 pounds with good results. you might try a few test shots at the lower poundage to see if changes are really needed.
You are correct that slower speeds with stiff arrows need more stabilization. However, a 4 fletch isn't really necessary, especially at hunting distances. You will accomplish as much or more with feathers. My so has shot feathers as low as 20# with helical and shot amazingly well.
