I'm doin a DIY elk hunt in ID this September with my bow. I live in MN where I consider myself a good enough judge of distance in our flat terrain. My question is, once a guy gets up in the hills is it that much harder guessing distances with the inclines/declines that I should invest in a rangefinder?
Never have been out west yet but with the hills and valleys of SE Ohio I wouldn't hunt without a range finder.
I use one. They do come in handy. I range objects then I have a good idea what the range is for the animal
Enjoy the trip. Hunting elk with a bow is a rush and a lot of work. But worth every blister and drop of sweat
Flat terrain is one thing but shooting across a ravine or sagebrush draw can be entirely different than what you're used to. If you don't want to buy a range finder see if you can borrow one for the trip. If I put that much money into an elk hunt, I wouldn't cheat myself out of the cost of a rangefinder. Good luck to you. Hope you have success and a great trip.
I'm use to hunting mountainous terrain and last year when I hunted in the midwest on flat land I was glad I had a range finder
