FYI, if you want more information on why there's collard does around here, here's a link for you: http://www.bowhunting.com/blog/2014/07/18/trapping-whitetails-in-minnesota/ I wrote that article after the first year of the study. This doe was trapped the second year (this past winter).
Well, I'm about to jump in the shower and finish getting ready to head out. I'm going to that ridge to the South. I think there's a nice little grassy bench I'd like to sit along just to the NNW of the left dot. The trick is going to be finding a suitable tree. Lots of young balsams and skinny black spruce there. Hoping to score an aspen or maple that gives me a view. Going to take me a bit to get there, I have to cross that swamp, and it's thick
Been sitting for about an hour so far. Took forever to get in here. Plus I dropped my release in the swamp and had to go back for it.
The view is nice but the sun is beating on me! Here's my 12 o'clock My 9 back up the bench And as always, my tree stand selfie
No action tonight. Getting back out through the swamp was a huge PITA though. Had to bust brush for a good part of the way. Got home and realized I knocked something loose on the HHA. I'll have to deal with that tomorrow. Not sure again, when I 'll be out next. Looks like a bit of a warm up for a few days. The last few mornings it was 27* out. I like that Time to log all my info into my Excel sheet.
So, due to my rambling nature and the constraints of the show, my opening pre-hunt footage wasn't able to be used for the last episode. I wanted to share it here quick to see what you all think. If it's something you'd like to see more of, I can't try and do a trimmed down version before my hunts and try and get it on the show. If not, I won't bother with it in the future and try to explain my strategy from the stand. Again, I'd love to hear your thought's on it.
I thought it was great, Fitz. There's a lot of big woods hunting around where I am (northern, northern Maine), but I mostly hunt agricultural areas because the big woods baffle me. You did a great job of explaining how you pick the location and why you put stands in certain areas etc. Edit: I'm scrolling through your thread now, looking at your photos and finding a crazy resemblance to how it looks in Maine. Interesting.
Northern MN and Maine are very similar (so I've heard). Only you have Lobsters and we have iron ore Two of the most popular areas to canoe for sure.
Fitz, as I a sure you know, I am a huge fan. If they don't out all that stuff in the shows, that's our loss. So I will watch the shows and then, as always, check for this thread. I have never passed on the chance to see a Fitz update. As crazy asit would be and hard for you to film. I would love to see you with a partner, someone who can catch some of your walk in and you hanging your set and camera set-up. I might enjoy the scouting of new land, the trail cam pics and the thought process that goes into each hunt as much as I enjoy the hunt?
I would like to see it in the future, but a much shorter version, maybe 45 to 60 seconds instead of 5 min.
That's the problem though. I'm not sure I can explain anything in 45 seconds. Least of all, why I'm hunting somewhere. Unless I'm like, "here's the stand and I have this wind." Which is all good, but that's never even close to why I hunt a stand. Especially in the big woods. Maybe 2.5-3 min? If I'm going to do it, I want it to be helpful in some way. I am long winded though
