Bull is still hanging up to the n. 3 does came from the S. Crossed the swamp and walked through the trees 15 yards in front of me. They've been feeding within 40 yards for the last 30 min.
One of the does would have been safe. It's one of the collared does. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure it's Jane. She hasn't been around this side of the lake for awhile. I have her on trail cam pics. I need to double check the number's on her ear tags. The other two would have been in serious trouble though
Not sure when I'll be out again. Might not be until Oct. Rainy for the next few days, then we have another busy weekend with the resort. I think that stand from last night is going to be killer for the rut
Man the ground there reminds me a lot of a remote spot my dad and I go in Canada to camp/fish every year...Kayak and fishing rods...lot of fun. Would love to hunt up there sometime. Bear or deer...though I haven't seen them I have seen plenty of sign around for them and moose.
It's a Bowbat XL, from GamePlan Gear. Here's a thread on how I use it http://forums.bowhunting.com/showthread.php/57672-My-2014-Stand-amp-Pack-Solution
So, I've been thinking about the other night. Those does came across the swamp to the cut, shortly after I got done calling to the moose. A guy I know up here once told me that he has quite often seen deer while he's been out calling moose. I'm beginning to wonder if there might be something about moose calls that these deer find intriguing or perhaps if they think it might be safe if they hear moose? It just be a new early season tactic for me?
Worth a shot to try it more often and see what happens. A sound they are certainly used to and might drive their curiosity. Keep us posted. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Curiosity Maybe but I believe more of a safe zone. Especially if they just came out and started feeding and not looking for the noise.
Well, it's looking like I might get out again sometime mid-week. Between things slowing down and my in-laws coming, I should get out. Looks like where I hunt will depend on the day. Tuesday/Wednesday winds start S and gradually turn SE then ESE by Friday (a rare wind for us). So, with really any of those winds, I can go try hunting an old cut (about 10 years old) that I've hunted before. I can keep on the North ridge next to the cut and those winds wil Blow my scent over the low swamp behind me. Here's a couple spots I could try: You can see the cut as the lighter green areas running through the center. It pinches down nice by those two locations. The blue line is a trail I can use to access the area. If I go out with more of a SE or ESE wind, I think I'll try and hunt part of the North Shore. Setting up along the ridge near site #4 will allow me easy and quick access, as well as my scent would blow out over the water (red cone). Remember, this image is rotated so North is to the left and E is up.
My footage from last week should be on the show this Friday. I'm curious to see if people like the Pre-hunt/strategy portion that I did. We'll see I guess
Here's a screen shot of what could have been some freezer meat if I was allowed to shoot does this year
It's funny you say that, last fall on the moose hunt here in Maine, there were multiple times we had deer well within shooting range of us as we were working on calling a bull in. They didn't have a clue we were even there... Makes you wonder.
