I have not read every post on this thread yet, we Fitz be in cell range to keep us on the edge of our seat, or will we read about it later?
I got a text a couple days ago and he hadn't shot anything yet. They were moving camp so hopefully they had more luck.
Yeah yeah, I'm still digging out from the pile of stuff that built up over the time I was gone. Hopefully I'll put something together this weekend. I'm hoping to hunt sometime next week too!
The way it looks now, I'm going to try and work through this next week as much as I can so I can start hunting mid-Oct on. I'm on the home stretch of our room & nursery remodel. I also need to start pulling docks and shutting down cabins. I do want to get out tomorrow or Monday and check my trailcams. I'm jonesin' to see what's going on out there!
Alright, I have to say this has been piss poor journal so far! I still haven't hunted whitetail since opening night (Sept. 13th). I'm a good 12-14 hunts behind where I'm usually at this time of year That's going to change, hopefully soon. I should be hitting the woods by Thursday. I. Cannot. Wait! I'll post up a bunch of stuff from my Colorado trip in the meantime.
It was kind of surreal. After 4 years of waiting, including having to postpone the initial trip planned for last Fall, we were packed up and ready to hit the road. It was Wednesday, and the plan was for my dad and I to drive from Ely to Rochester, MN to pick up my buddy Nick's gear and then get as far into SD as we could. Nick would be flying into Hayden, Co that Sunday to join us on the hunt! We pulled my dad's Ice Castle to use as part of our base camp, and carry all our gear for this 3000 mile round trip. We just may have been some of the first guys to hunt from an ice house in Colorado The 5 1/2 hour drive to Rochester was pretty uneventful. The trailer was pulling well and the music was appropriate.
After driving across Minnesota from North to South and grabbing all Nick's gear, we were right back on the road, this time Crossing the state from East to West. We actually made it over 1/3 the way through South Dakota before pulling off I-90 to sleep for 4 hours in the Ice Castle. Our timing of the trip was fantastic as far as Fall colors went. We were blessed with beautiful scenery all the way to camp. We soon started spotting animals and vistas along the way and we'd occasionally stop for a quick photo or two.
Late thursday afternoon (about 5:15 PM), we rolled into Steamboat Springs. After a failed attempt to get our tags due to "Fraud Protection" on both our credit cards ( ), we decided just to bust through town and head north past Clark and to our hopeful camp. The drive up the mountain was more beautiful than the whole drive out there. Once we got half way to our 1st choice of sites, we noticed that the road was narrowed. We elected to dump the ice house and proceed with the Chevy alone. This was a good idea. 300 yards down the narrowed road we hit a gate that stopped all motorized traffic from traveling further up the mountain. While we were hoping to get much further, we had a number of backup plans. After getting the truck backed up and turned around, we headed back to the ice house and a camp site near the end of the wider roadway. We had just enough light to get camp set up and a fire going. We'd do our best to get a good night sleep, then travel back to Steamboat in the morning to get our tags and a few groceries to get us through until Nick flew out.
