Looking forward to following this thread again. Can't wait to see all the great pics/videos and hear about all of the interesting and detailed hunts. Thanks for doing this again Fitz.
I'm pretty sure this cut is part of a designed moose habitat push by the state. Ties right in with the moose and deer tracking that they're doing here.
Fitz, back in June I fished Crane Lake, Big Sand Lake and Namakan Lake....killed smallmouth and some good walleye as well. How far was I from you and does your lake have that type of fishing? If so do you ever do Senko's for the smallies? Can't wait for the hunting season. Dove hunt on Sept 3rd and bowhunting Sangamon County, Illinoois as of Oct 1st! I send have my time in the stand reading this thread!
Takes about an hour and 45 min to get there from here. You did drive within about 45 min when you passed through Virginia, MN. If I'm fishing for smallies or largemouth, I love to wacky rig a white Senko I've done well with that approach the last few years. Sad thing is, I barely fish. ON;y been out 3 times this year. When I finally have time to, bow season is over and Bowhunting > fishing.
No photos or sightings since I saw him under the bird feeder a week or so after hitting his shoulder. He never showed last year, I'm guessing he's dead.
Fitz, what kind of ideas do you have to use the cut to your advantage? Whenever I think about cut woods I think back to the book Deep Woods by Greg Miller.
I am also curious on your plans for the cut. I have never utilized them myself but I know every year during rifle season there is typically a blaze orange perimeter.
Well, since it was just cut in the last week or two, I'm not expecting much for browse this year. I'm really counting on it as more of a barrier. Like I said, the E side of the cut has created a great edge that deer are already using. I'll probably get a stand set up in the NE inside corner. The strip of timber between the cut and lake should have more concentration this year too. I really need to redeploy some cameras to better cover this area. And I want to get that mock scrape going. Hopefully over this week. Things are still crazy here at the resort, but they start to slow down in Sept. I'm still trying to get the last details of our Colorado trip figured out. My dad's buddy just dropped out yesterday. Now it's just the 3 of us.
As a matter of fact, I do Pulled one camera yesterday so I could put it on a mock scrap I started. While I was in the area, I decided to pull the card along the creek. Low and behold.... New guy He's a 6x5 with a split G2 on his left side. I don't think we've ever gotten him on camera before. I'll be keeping an eye out for him this Fall for sure!
Awesome............. IN the first 2 pictures his body looks like a young deer. But looking at the last two he has a hump and a decent gut. Nice buck.
I like the looks of your area up there. I love the deep woods! The big woods seem to be the most challenging to hunt in my opinion.
