Congrats on the doe, Fitz. Too bad she didn't come in a bit sooner (video).

Matt, he sold me on the mount too. Mine should be here by the end of the week. I'm going to try out my point and shoot first.

Guests checked in early and I've got the first W wind of the season, so I'm headed to my new set in the corner of the lake.

Looks like I'm not the only one that likes to hunt this spot...

That is an awesome pic! Question, does that make you nervous walking in and out in the dark? I know I would be. Do you carry a sidearm?

Well, grouse ducks eagle grey jays and the kestrel tonight. I like the stand. I can see more than I thought I'd be able to.

    Here's my consolation prize....

Cubs, not nervous at all and no, I do not carry a side arm. I'm in no danger from wolves. I'm more likely to be attacked by a moose, loon, or grouse. 1000000:1

I must say, reading your journal reminds me why I fell in love with hunting and the outdoors. From the sounds of it there is no such thing as a bad day/night in the stand for you. Which is how it should be. I have been guilty myself in the past of deciding if I had a good hunt or not by whether or not I harvested an animal. Your insights and hunting experiences remind me of what a hunt should actually be about!! Congratulations on the doe!! I have a feeling we will all be delighted to read your upcoming posts. Whether you are able to get Blade or not!! Keep up the fantastic work!! And thank you for reminding me why it is I love the outdoors and hunting so very much!!

Captain, you are putting in a lot of work for this thread, thanks, I really enjoy all the pics and I too would love to smoke a wolf like Rutin said.. We can shoot 2 this year in Idaho, man I hope I get a crack at one. I heard them last night while dressing my elk. Kinda creepy but luckily they were way off.

    Wow, Thanks!!

I am truely blessed to have the time and opportunity to hunt where I do. I try not to take that for granted. I'd hope that every hunter truely enjoys the outdoors as I do.

Absolutely!! I would agree it sounds like you are blessed with the opportunity to hunt the places you do and when you are able to. But allowing us that may not be quite as "fortunate" to follow along with your journal is pretty sweet!! Good luck the rest of the way. I'll be following along to see where the journey takes you. By the way, have the wildfires up by you caused you to hunt differently? Have you witnessed any difference in the behavior in the animals?

Even though the fire started & remains less that 20 miles away, we honestly wouldn't know the was one.

We are due West of the fire, so our prevailing winds have kept us safe, infact, we've yet to smell smoke! Our local businesses (restaurants, motels, grocery stores, etc.) are loving all the firefighters in town.

I don't think that the smoke alone would change the animals behavior. They know that they are safe unless it is real close.

The burned area will actually help our slowly declining Moose population. All that new growth will be prime habitat for many creatures, not to mention that it's needed by many plant species, like the Jack Pine, for regeneration.

I'm glad to hear that it hasn't affected your area directly. I live in Northern Wisconsin and for about a week straight we could smell smoke from the fire. I woke up one morning and actually thought my house was on fire as I knew nothing of the fires by you until that day. Its amazing that a tragedy such as that can end up being turned into a positive on many fronts...

:tu: I'll be in your neck of the woods during the WI rifle season. We have a cabin between Spooner & Hayward.
