Bummed. Not going to make this trip happen now. Got cancelation messages from my brother and buddy that it's a no go.
Going to try again in a couple weeks. Right now water temperature need to rise. This dang cold spell pulled the bait fish out in the really deep water and the small mouth followed. My brothers wife is having liver issues so it may be a solo trip for me if I get to go.
Nope. Swimming deep jigs with a shad., or carolina rigging a shad on the channel breaks and bends. They do drop shooting like this too.
Once again the weather has my trip next week for smallmouth on hold. I've wore out my fingers tying jigs for this trip, and look forward to putting them to the test. My next windows may be early March.
Looking good! I been tying to restock for this spring/summer and I hope to get out soon for some steelhead, haven’t even made it out yet!
I have been trying for steelhead here and there. Such a fun and great fighting fish to catch. I had a great late October and November for them, but it has been tough fishing ever since then. The river is low, clear, and cold. Makes them pretty lethargic and picky about what they'll grab. I have always bank fished with bobber and jig but am working on getting into and figuring out bead fishing. I think presenting such a natural "egg" looking bait may be the best option for the really clear and cold water is right now. I have smoked up a couple batches and have just enough frozen fillets to fill the smoker one more time. Would be nice to pick up another smoker batch or two. And a hen or two so I have some roe to cure.
did a drive around checking a few steelhead locations .. very little water open and at 15 degrees... nope ..... gonna get colder for the next week too ... did renew my steelhead spinner collection ... may not get out till March at this rate ..
I like tossing spinners where I can, usually costs me some $$ in hang ups/breakoffs on unseen logs, rocks, etc. .. I'll wade where I can to get my hardwear back ... I used to tie spawn sacs from either chinooks/coho or steelhead, but you got to catch one first ... I'll cover some ground, there are great runs once you get to 'em. Waders are a must ..... makes one forget they are in a National Park/Indiana.... there are quite a few fingerlings (6-10"ers) this time of year in many locations, makes it hard to use sacs ..... heck, Ive caught a dozen of the little rascals just trying to get to an adult, on both sacs and spinners ... lol ..
I found this ... now that much of these streams are now Nat. Parks lands .... damn feds .. "Fishing is allowed under federal, state and local laws. You need an Indiana Fishing License and a stamp if fishing for trout and salmon. Fishing is only permitted using a hook and line, with the rod or line being closely attended. Chumming or placing preserved or fresh fish eggs, fish roe, food, fish parts, chemicals, or other foreign substances in fresh waters for the purpose of feeding or attracting fish in order that they may be taken is not permitted. Digging for bait, or using for bait any plant, animal, worm, or insect from within the park is also prohibited." ..... cant use sacs, but you can 'crawlers' if 'purchased' out side the park (??) also, no more chumming with corn for carp ... WTF .. ive got to stop by the main office for clarification ...
Long time guys. Been a while. Been grinding ice fishing lately. Catching 12+” crappies on a local lake. Biggest has been just under 16”. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
