Nah I have the fishing boat for fishing I just wanted the wife to do the start up and drive on the pontoon so she can do it on her own.
So got home and the wife wanted a pontoon ride, I wanted to kayak fish guess who went on a pontoon ride? This time she lost her lure you can't wacky rig with an ultra light.
Wacky rigging is taking a plastic bait like a senko, I went with a 4-1/2" 1 hook, weedless thru the middle of the bait you drop that down in a open pocket in weeds or pads and let it sink slow and twitch it once in a while. Deadly on bass and usually not the little ones. I had a strange moment last night I went on the pontoon on a fishing expedition, granted I was not fishing but still I only had 1 beer on board.
I see a dorm fridge purchase in your future for the pontoon... Just rig it up to your boat batteries with a solar charger and mini inverter --- Never worry about the single beer issue again or warm beer! This plus a fridge
Add some catfish and a couple grass carp and you have a nice balance there. I’m no biologist but that’s what we have minus the walleye and it works well. Our pond is about 2 acres
This works well on shallow water crappie. Gives the fish an extra second to hit before the bait hits the bottom
For 30-plus years I would have said a large spinner bait with Colorado blades. Something you can fish fast near the surface or slow way down for colder water. But, my son introduced me to chatter-baits and I am a huge fan. I have had tremendous luck with them the last couple of years. I still start with the spinner, but have ended up catching my fish on the chatter-baits.
My e-bay order came in and I am giddy. I bought vintage back when dardevle spoons were made of brass, then painted. The two I bought have the brass backs instead of silver. It makes a difference.
Im a finesse fisherman. If I had one it would be plastic worms. I can work them slow or fast near the surface. Very versatile.
Had every intention of fishing tonight but the wife felt that the boat needed to be out of the water based on weather. I know better than to argue
As you can probably see, the answer really depends on how and where you are trying to fish. All of those options will catch a ton of bass if you use them in the right situation yet won’t catch a single thing, except for maybe some weeds, if you use them in the wrong situation. I often fish a river from a John boat and a weedless plastic bullfrog frog works wonders there. It isn’t a top water frog but I don’t put any weight on it so it sinks pretty slowly and kind of stays within a foot or so from the surface. My river is usually fairly muddy and has poor visibility so keeping it shallow makes it easier for the fish to see its outline against the surface. I like to toss it onto the bank behind a bass bed or some good cover then work it back into the water. Also tossing it over the trunk of a downed tree thats laying in the river and making it “jump” off the tree into the water is pretty effective. If I am fishing somewhere with clearer water I would probably ditch the frog and go with sota’s spinner or maybe the swim bait but only if it was fairly open water and not a lot of weeds. If the pond/lake had a lot of weedy cover for the bass to hide in then I would grab the plastic worm and slowly twitch it through the weeds.
I love the wacky worm or a ned rig, learning to be subtle. It's like living on a golf course, I can walk out the door on the 3rd T box.
