Sorry if this is in the wrong area to be posting but I’m a new hunter (today was my first day ever hunting) I unfortunately don’t have anyone to give me any tips or tricks. My question is how far deep in the woods do you travel? I’m hunting public land, do I just move 20 feet off the trail? Do I go as deep as I can and just sit and wait? I’m so lost lol. The best way I can explain the terrain, you’ve got an open path (enough to fit 2 trucks on side by side) and to the left and right are wooded areas, right side goes way deeper then the left, I’ve seen deer prints and scat on the walking trail. I’m just new no clue what I’m doing

Welcome to the world of hunting. Where do you live? Tennessee's wildlife agency sponsors online and in person academies for hunting and fishing. Sorry I can't of more help. Others will chime in here. Might even get a mentor who lives close to you. Good luck and be safe.

Fairly easy. Deer need cover to hide in, food to eat and water to drink. Need to learn were these spots are and the area the deer are using the most. And hunt close to as many of those 3 things. I look for fresh sign, like clean tracks and poop. Heavy trails crossing a water way is a easy way to get started. Find a creek and walk the edge or better yet right in the creek. Wouldn't hurt to just walk in and try and jump deer. That way you know were they are bedding. Then plan future hunts around that info. Take note of the way they escape the bedding, then can sneak up on that trail on a later hunt also. Just have fun and dont over think it.

I appreciate the help! I found an old pond right before I left today, seen a few tracks near the edge. Think I’m gonna set up somewhere along there

Good luck again. I found a small creek here in SE TN. Nothing. Came back later in the day and looked like a herd of deer watered there. Aarrrggh!

I found a pond I’m gonna get to early in the morning and see what happens, supposed to be rainy and a bit windy tomorrow but who knows, I seen acorns on the ground, few deer tracks, don’t know what to look for for the bedding but oh well…today was one of the most peaceful experiences I’ve ever had…being in the woods right when the sun rose was breathtaking.

Your last statement is the icing on the cake. Nothing like sitting on a mountain side and watching the darkness creep down as the sun rises.

Don't give up, please. Do you know anybody else that bow hunts? Mentorship really helps. I am a self taught hunter I gun hunted for 20 plus years and shot a button buck over a corn pile one time. I always wanted the classic 8 point buck, I figured it out with a bow. Were you hunting from the ground?

I unfortunately don’t know anyone that hunts, definitely ain’t giving up. I was hunting from the ground, got in around 6:30 a.m and just waited until sun rise, debating next time I go if I should go right at sun rise and just walk and stalk and hopefully catch a deer or if I should just hunker down and stay there from dawn to dusk. I’m fortunate enough to have a job I can take off any day/any hour so time isn’t an issue for me…just the knowledge part is the issue lol
