Hi, my name is Seth and i will be getting a compound bow this weekend. Spring turkey season starts on the 3rd. So my question is since i am new to archery and hunting should i not even think about hunting until i get good with a bow first? I am also nervous because i have bad hearing loss even though i do wear a hearing aid in one ear, its one of those half shell hearing aids that go in the ear but anyway do any of you know any hearing impaired hunters? I have one more question is there a list of do and don't to hunting?
Being that you are new to turkey hunting and achery I would go ahead and try to get your first bird out of the way with a gun. If you had more time to practice with a bow and get comfortable with it then i would say give it a shot with a bow. I know a few people that have hard troubles hearing and they usually do ok you just have to really keep your eyes working the whole time. If you can have a buddy tag along and maybe they will be able to hear a bird gobble a better and then you guys will be able to close the distance. Good luck let us know how it all goes
Our duty as hunters is to kill our game quickly and ethically. If you are not proficient with a bow at this time I would use the shotgun. Turkeys have a small vital area so unless your proficient with your bow you may end up just injuring the turkey which isn't fair. Take the time to practice this spring and summer with your bow and give it a shot in the fall when you have more practice under your belt. Good luck
Like others have said, I would get use to your bow first with feeling comfortable at shooting at least 20 yards. As for the hearing impaired, I know quite a few people who hunt and are in your situation. All they ever say is they just use there sense of sight that much more. In many cases you will see it before you hear it!!
Thanks for the replies, i will definitely practice a lot as much as i can, the only downside to the county i live in, is fall turkey season is closed in 5C berks county Pennsylvania. I think it will be better to get a 5-6 months of practice in before fall and winter season. hunting with rifles and shotguns just doesn't do it for me. I would hunt with a buddy or family member except none of them hunt. My uncle and Grandpop passed away years ago. So what would be the best way to meet hunters or meet hunters my age which is 28?
Failure is just a step you have to take while learning to become a bow hunter the good news it's all fun.
I'm old enough to be your grandfather can't hear and have macular degeneration. If you're not nervous you ain't normal. Practice son before hunting any game. As far as a hunting buddy, ask around at local gun/archery shops if they could get you in contact with a mentor. Wish you lived closer... Sent from my C811 4G using Tapatalk
