This afternoon we've had an E to ESE wind, which is great for a stand I have on the ridge up behind the Lodge. So about 4pm I'm headed out the door, sneak in (bust 3 grouse), climb up and start my sit. Well, after about 30 minutes, the wind starts swirling a bit and I start second guessing myself... well I came back in. I decided that it wasn't worth sitting out there if I'm most likely going to get myself busted. So, have any of you guys backed out of a hunt part way in? It just seems weird, I mean I should be out there hunting, but it just didn't feel right...
I've done in it a few times on hard gusting days. Days I shouldn't have even been out to begin with. You have to make the call on what you feel best with. If it didn't feel right, then you made a good call.
I try and pick the best site based on the wind. If it changes I just get pissed and sit it out. I have not reached a point where I get down. My main hunting ground is nothing more than an area that they pass through and I really only have 1 area where they come from the same general direction.
Fitz, I can honestly say I've never backed out in my life...if you hunted my property you'd say the same....My property that I've hunted my whole life is very strange when it comes to wind. The terrain is very hilly and close to a lake with ridges and valleys and yada yada yada...there is no such thing a s consistent wind.... Last weekend I stood in front of my cabin to take a piss, (wasn't hunting, was working on the tractor) and I was thinking about all the conversation I've heard about using a particular stand for a particular wind....as I pissed the wind change 180 degrees three times. I would love to hunt property were you knew were the wind was going to come from long enough for it to have an impact. SB just hunt
I've never backed out but went into spots when the wind was wrong knowing that it would change for the good in time for the deer movement!
