I just gained permission to hunt a large (for my area) farm. I am not sure how many acres it is yet but the layout looks great! I'm real excited as this is my first big property I have ever obtained. Now comes the real work of scouting and setting up stands. I'm a little behind the 8-ball with all this since the season is already under way but I'm ready to get at it! I can't wait to see what kind of deer are on it. Just thought I'd share with you guys.

    That's awsome.
Don't worry so much about all the rest of the crap that we usually worry about with hunting deer.
walk the property one day find the beatin down trails and set up about 15 yards from it and you will score.
Alot of us need to go back to bascis when we start over thinking our hunts.

Thanks MP. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute something more than does to Team 15

Anyone have any more tips on scouting farms? I'm going to look for pinch points and transitions like usual, but I've never had an opportunity to hunt a corn field or other crop as a food source. I've always hunted deeper in the woods on trails. Is it any different? It seems to be the method of choice during early season. I'm going to talk to the farmer and hopefully he can clue me in on where he sees them and how often.

hunt thae food late season if you can.
Find thier bedding area and set up inbetween that and the food source for your morning hunts. then evening hunts closer to the food source. Just try to pick an area preffably the bedding area to stay out of no matter what ( unless to recover a deer)
then they will always use it.
we are on 27 acres and have stands on the field line and they go back to where the deer bed and we leave the bedding area and middle alone.

I too was granted permission to hunt ground last year a couple of weeks prior to opening day. I think it’s best to walk the parameter of the property first. Bring a plot map, Google earth map, or just draw it out on paper. Then make points on those maps anytime you come across trails, scrapes, bedding, exc… Don’t rush to put a stand up by the first sign of deer, there is a great chance there is a better place to set up.

After you’ve walked the parameter of the property try and located the heaviest used deer trail you found and enter the property that way, but Ninja style. This should lead you to many intersections for the deer. I love hunting those intersections, because there‘s more activity.

You may even find old permanent stands built into trees. Those are usually a good sign of where to set up a camera or even a new stand to check things out.

Good luck on the new ground it like getting the biggest item on your Christmas list from Santa.

    Congrats on the new land.

I gained 640 acres last year around this time, and I ended up killing my buck off that land. I kind of had a general understanding of the land, because I used to work there back in high school. I found a good pinch point and set up my pack in stand, and ended up shooting a 150" buck.

Good luck with the new hunting spot :tu:

Thanks guys. I'm pretty pumped. I can't wait to find out more. All I know is that it's a farm. I don't know how much land there is or if anyone else hunts it but I drove by today and saw does. How will the corn being cut or not affect the deer?

    Thanks for the help guys.

Congrats on the land. I was lucky enough to add 160 acres to my adjoining 8 this year. I need more stands!

Well I went and scouted the land today. The farmer says the corn is going to come down soon. How will this affect things? I saw a lot of sign but the problem is everything except the fields is so thick that it's impossible to get through so I'm limited to the field edges and im only able to
    Hunt about 50 acres.
