My plan was to post some great pictures for u guys but the deer had over plans. Big fat nothing on camera this past week. Kind of makes me nervous... do you guys ever get zero action over a course of a week in an area that usually sees traffic?
Test out the camera and make sure it is working properly. I check my camera every week and I usually get around 300-400 pics and believe me the property I hunt is NOT heavily populated with deer. You should be getting at least SOMETHING on camera. Is there just no deer or flat out no pictures?
yes ive been skunked twice this year. just leave it and try some different attractant. all i got in my area right now are 4 different spikes and some doe with fawns and a small 6 possible 8 but didnt set cam up for 3 rd burst.. worst year yet for me but November my cameras light up
I made sure to walk in front of the camera to make sure it was working properly and it did work. I had 1 burst of nothing on camera, so who knows what set it off and 1 burst of just white, not sure why it was all white. Last year this spot got tons of action from does to fawns to a few average size bucks. They seemed to come from multiple directions so I figured this was a great intersection of runways or a bedding area. Currently I just have a mineral lick out thinking that would be plenty to get them to smile for the camera but I guess I was wrong. What kind of attractants are you guys using this early?
Was there any sign that deer have been going to the mineral lick or was it completely untouched? Was there still sign of deer in the area? If you can find a deer trail, follow it to see what food source they are eating from. Maybe throw you camera up there. And to answer your last question I've had a trophy rock out and I have had tons of deer coming to it.
The rock seemed to be untouched. I will be walking the area tomorrow to check for different trails. I just find it really strange that over a week absolutely nothing was in that area. The whole lot is over 100 acres and right now its full of vegetation. I figured the spot was good because it was right in between two good water sources. I haven't seen anyone else in the area and last year there was only one other hunter outside of my family hunting the land. I'm really kind of stomped...
Not necessarily true. I check mine very week and I've had does and fawns 2 hours after I switched SD cards. It all depends on where you are hunting.
I'd bring that camera home and check it in the yard under all conditions for a couple of days. Blessings........Pastorjim
so i went back armed with a few apples. I like cutting one or two in half and rubbing it on a tree trunk thats close by to help broadcast the scent a bit. We will see what happens. I also decided to cave in and purchase a second camera. I found a trail no more than 100 yards from the pond they use as a main water source. Theres a small clearing where i could set up since it does get a little thick on both sides on the trail and depending on what i find on camera, id probably have to do a little work to clear a path on a pine for a stand. wish me luck and hopefully this weekend i will have some pictures to post.
I would recommend NOT checking the camera weekly. Yeah you might get does and fawns but any mature doe or buck will pattern you better than you will be patterning them checking it weekly. As far as no pictures, I find that very unusual regardless of where you are. A leaf, bird, squirrel, something should have set it off during that weeks time.
I will let this one sit for longer just to make sure. And i shouldnt have said there were no pictures. I did have a 2 bursts of pictures. 1 burst was of nothing (so it could have been a squirrel, bird, leaf, whatever) the 2nd burst was just a white screen. I also did take pictures of me when i was testing it.
At first I was checking my new cam every week and had only does and fawns. Last pull was a 2.5 week soak and had my first 2 bucks show up but not until the day before I pulled the card. I would definitely suggest letting it sit a minimum 2 weeks. I'm new to trail cams so by no means an expert but the longer soak definitely helped in my case.
