I think mule deer are the funnest to hunt. I have killed a few but nothing that big yet, and not with a bow. Congrats!

What a Mule! Nice job MN!

Were you anywhere near Alamosa or Mosca? My old man used to live there, right next to the Sand Dunes National Park. There were some huge Mulies roaming that area for sure!

    Thanks guys!

Finch, actually, the first buck I had my sights set on was the biggest. Their frames were about the same but the first one had alot of junk and abnormals on the tops of his tines. He was a dandy but when this one walked into view, I decided I probably shouldn't be too greedy waiting for the other one.

Fitz, yes we were south of the sand dunes. Nice mulies there but just not alot of deer. In fact I only saw one more doe the rest of the week. Great area to hunt though, especially for elk.

Preacher, its a darn shame, I used to be dark as the night!

So as I read the story, I admittedly didn't anticipate seeing that hog a mulie pictured! HOLY COW! That think is a monster. Big congrats to you!

    Wow!
You are so modest in your story, and then I got to the pics!!!
What a great story..thanks for sharing.

I am wondering if you can share what the odds of drawing a mule deer tag are, and how much it costs for a non-resident to purchase.

I am just starting bowhunting, and live in Vermont, but my dream (it will come true) is to hunt out west for either Elk, Mulie, or pronghorn.

Any more info you could post, regarding where you stayed, cost of tags and license, and any other info about hunting the west...?

    Thanks very much!

Cool! My dad & step-mom lived and worked on the Nature Conservancy Ranch south of the Dunes. I spent the summer of 2001 there. Mulies and elk would come off the slopes into the Valley every afternoon. The ranch (approx. 200,000 acres) had a bison heard and cattle also. It was a great summer!

Here's a shot of one of the bachelor groups of mulies. You could get within 50 yds of them with the golf carts TNC used to get a round.

Congrats again on the great trophy!

Congrats on a fine deer, awesome story! I'm guessing he'll go near 180". He's a definitely a nice addition for the West! I'm sure he'll be in the West's top ten.
