Instead of hanging around and watching football, Dave, Kendall and I went out for some 'cool' weather bowfishing.

Dave chipped the ice out of his boat for the outing.

We hit the water right at dark. Parts of the lake were choppy and muddy but when we got out of the wind we did start seeing some carp. Dave and I choked on our first couple of shots and K stepped in and showed us how it's done. Then I connected. It was Dave's turn to score on a carp when we hit a log with the troller.

Hitting stuff with the troller is part of bowfishing (unless you have a fan boat) but every now and then.... the troller takes particular offense to the hit and breaks. Well, the prop on Dave's broke on that log and despite our best efforts at rampside repair we had to call it a night.

We did get home in time to watch the last quarter of the Superbowl.

    K's first fish for '09.

My first for '09. (I'm wearing more layers of clothes than when I deer hunt)

Dang, you're not giving them any chance to feel safe. Way to smoke some scaleys.

The funny part is, not only did you have a blast bowfishing, you caught the best part of the Super Bowl anyways. LOL.

Holy Crap Christine! You are dedicated! My hats off to you guys! I just wait till I see them cruising in May, and grab my case. I guess I'll have to add some bowfishing rig mtc to my ever growing list of TTD. Do you know of anywhere in Chicago area where they allow bowfishing, or do I have to go down to the IL River? I'm not really into the Silver carp deal, I like the buffalo/grass carp/sit in the boat and wait method. AWESOME JOB, AND THANKS!!

I'm geared up for some serious bowfishing this year. Ice fishing season only lasted about 4 weeks this year.

    First of all congrats Christine

It doesn't cost a whole lot of money to get started. Maybe $100 to $150. And thats if you don't have an old recurve/compound laying around the house. It also depends on if you shoot those sissy AMS bottle reels like Christine shoots:lol:

Went out with a buddy (Jamie Martin) and filmed him shoot some carp in Wisconsin today... It was a good time. He shot about 50 fish... If you go out be careful of northerns and walleyes they are in the rivers now too. Somebody had shot a few and the warden was down there investigating.... Know your target!
Got to start out with a pic of him crawling out of the river after falling in

Sunset, I have been shooting a bow since I was a kid. I grew up on a lake and next a river. I'd see all those carp up in the shallows, flooded fields and timber during the spawn so combining archery with fishing was an easy transition.

As much as I like deer hunting, bowfishing can be so much more fun. :D

I remember my Dad bowfishing a little when I was a kid. I remember he said it was hard to judge where the fish were sometimes because of the refraction of the water. Is this a problem for you?

It can be a problem. Generally you can tell if you're shooting over fish so you just aim lower and lower until you start connecting. It gets pretty tricky when you're shooting 2 lb carp in 4 feet of water.
