I'm 17 and have been in talented art since 4th grade until my sophomore year in high school and have pretty much given it up all together since then. Was really bored earlier so I decided to take out the paper and draw something I'm interested in to see if I'd enjoy it again. So I looked up pictures of bass and about 20 minutes later, this is what I had

Well done. I used to spend hours drawing in Academy sketch pads as a kid. I always enjoyed drawing. You have talent.

Yeah I used to spend a lot more time when I was younger. Later on in talented art, they stopped letting you draw what you wanted and made you think outside the box which isn't for me at all so I gave it up. Might start getting back into now though. We will see how this one turns out. Thanks!

Somebody else telling what is art and how you should go about it is off puting and defeats the personal expression and enjoyment that is art. Free creation rocks.

I agree! Once I got into high school, it was either draw from your imagination or not at all. Everyone in my class was all artsy and drew aliens, demonic stuff, and eye balls crying everywhere, etc making A's and I was pretty much failing because I only really draw landscapes and wildlife. Without reference, there is no detail. I ended up not even turning in work later in the year and quit the following. In middle school (grades 4-6) you could draw whatever you wanted which was much more enjoyable! These are a few from those years...

The key is to focus on what you enjoy creating. Many artists have become successful painting things that art snobs turned their nose up at the time. People like Walt Disney were not good enough at one time but then exploded doing what they wanted. Another is Michael Godard who was an illustrator for Disney and had a dying daughter that used to love him drawing olives as people, he has gone on to be the number one selling artist in the U.S. even though galleries laughed at his early work. The fact is that if you enjoy drawing it and looking at it that is satisfaction in itself. As you can see others on the forum also like your work, screw what the art teachers said and enjoy your passion!

Very nice! I'll have to bust out some of my old drawings and look at them again.

    Very nice!

I took some art in high school and thankfully no one was docked for style inside or outside the box. (but I was outside the box anyhow)

College was completely different. I took a sculpting class but since I wanted to sculpt realistically (as realistic as I could make it anyhow) I was docked and discouraged. The painting class was the worst. I kid you not that my painting instructor pulled out his portfolio and it was nothing but disembodied genitals (male and female). Like hanging from trees.. in bowls.. it was scary.

I haven't pursued any art since then. I regret that.

You have talent, use it! :)

That's how high school was for me. I draw realistic things like wildlife and scenery and that's it. Everyone else was drawing things like you mentioned. To put it in simple terms, I didn't fit in or get along well with anyone in the class including the teacher. After starting again, I enjoy it a lot more because I can draw what I want!

    Thank you!

I wish I could find some of the artwork I did when I got into highschool but that was more than 30 years ago. I think some of it resides in an old cedar chest back on the farm. Pencil was my preferred medium. I like your stuff.
