First off, this will probably be a long post with a lot of pics so I will try not to lose you. Second, I would like to say thanks to all the guys on BHOD series. Bowhunting has been a new and completely different world for me versus rifle hunting and I have learned so much from the show! Now on to the good stuff!! Last Saturday I hunted a new property. I was on a pine ridge with hard wood draws on the left and right. I had a NW wind in my face and the deer should be coming from either in front of me or to my left. I ended up passing on a spike that morning and had 3 does cross about 100 yds down the trail from me. So that afternoon I moved my stand farther down so I would be closer to the crossing. I had another doe and a 3 pt cross even farther up the trail. The one thing I noticed is that all of the deer seemed to come in from the west and follow the bluff line before crossing the ridge to head to the other draw. Today was a SW wind so I knew I would need to go a lot farther in so i could catch them coming towards me. I got about 20 ft up a pine and waited. Here are some pics of my view: Front: 3 o'clock: 6 o'clock: I spotted a spike coming down the trail and I got ready. 20 minutes later he finally got to the opening to my right and I let an arrow fly. He was walking slow so i didn't try to stop him and I was shaking. I ended up shooting just over his back. After about 20 min, the 3 pt came trotting down the same trail. He was moving a lot quicker and it was all I could do to get ready in time. This time I didn't take any chances. I stopped him in the exact same spot the spike was at. I let another arrow fly at 30 yds and he jumped up and ran back the way he came. After about 10 min, I started the climb down. About halfway down I could see the arrow was covered in blood and I started shaking with excitement. Well I looked around and didn't see any blood. I backed out and waited 2 hours. Another club member hunting another unit close to mine came over and we started the track. We found about 3 drops of blood where I shot him and that was it. Well I was starting to get worried. So we started walking in the general direction and the other guy found him. Well turns out he ran down a bluff. So after like a 45 min drag and 7 pre-heartattacks later, we got him to the road. Here are some pics: After looking at the entrance and exit wounds, I was surprised there wasn't at least some little blood. Here they are. The muzzy tore through him. Entrance: Exit: I am definitely hooked and ready to get back out in the woods and start filling my freezer with some slick heads!!
Congrats bud! I kinda miss those pine woods down there, I lived just down the road from you in Scottsboro when I was a kid. Beautiful country down there.
Congrats, was about to say that looked like the veiw from my stand,...then I see your just up the road in Huntsville,...cool!!
Congrats on your first! Strange not to find blood with a shot like that. I shot a doe Saturday with almost identical entrance and exit holes. She went about 30 yards and blood was squirting out the whole time. There was blood everywhere! Funny how things can be so different from one deer to the next. Congrats again buddy!!
lol i actually hunt Marion and Winston counties. wish i could find some place in Jackson county to hunt. but yeah with that exit hole, i was really surprised there wasn't a blood trail. i think it was pooling in his chest though because about 5 feet leading up to him was nothing but a river of blood. And PT, it feels awesome!! Now i just want to get back out there and get another lol.
