and my first ever buck harvest! Last night was awesome! This nice guy came in just before sunset and completely stayed out of range as it went up the hill behind me. Little did I know, one of the other guys that hunts this property also, put a feeder up about 100 yards behind my stand up the hill. So, no amount of grunts or bleats could bring him back down. He was looking for a snack. Then, the feeder went off and spooked him right back down my way! But he stayed about 45-50 yards away as he side hilled right below my stand. A couple grunts got him to slow and I went to full draw... He stopped and I estimated about a 45 to 50 yard shot... I have only 15, 20, and 30 yard pins. I aim a bit high and think ::do I shoot? do I shoot? F it:: and release! I hear my arrow fly down to him and continue way down the hill and I think ::Oh great I missed:: Then he takes a step, flips over backwards, and drops on the spot!! Holy cow I hit him!! Within 5 minutes he is expired and I wait another 30 mins until my buddies get there to help out before I get out of the stand. It's well after dark when we walk down and find him in his tracks! It turned out to be a nice quartering-to shot through the base of the neck and out the lung on the other side, and clipped the heart too. Sorry for the long post for my first one, but I'm too damn excited!
Well....congrats on the buck. Now I don't normally try to be the ethics police...but a 45-50 yard (that you had no pin for no less) quartering toward shot.....really?? I hope you realize how lucky you that deer isn't still running around with an arrow in it.
That I do... and I'm very thankful for it!! Given that... I've chosen to name him Felix: From a Roman cognomen meaning "lucky, successful" in Latin.
