Third season with the bow after moving from rifle hunting in northern Minnesota to central IL. Shot this guy at 5 yards Saturday about 15 minutes prior to sundown. He was slightly quartering towards me and I got him in the liver. He jumped a fence, went across a pasture fairly wobbly, got to another fence and stood there for a minute. I thought he was going to tip over right there. He jumped that and I lost sight of him in the timber. By the time I got down and found the arrow, which was a complete pass through, it was getting pretty dark. I decided to back out and get him right away in the morning knowing it was a liver shot and besides walking a little funny didn't seem to be hurt too badly. So this morning we get on the trail and find very little blood for about 250 yards. Drop here and drop there. Finally start getting blood and then a spot where he laid down. Finally we see him about 50 yards a head in a clearing and my heart sinks. Antlers and rib cage. The coyotes picked him apart over night and there was nothing left other than the head. I was crushed but understand its part of the game. Largest buck I have ever shot and first with the bow. Getting a euro mount done. [IMG]

Yep, coyotes are bad around here.

Congrats on the buck, sorry about the meat. That's why I can't let one lay and never hunt evenings when I have to work the next day.

That's too bad but had you pushed him, you may not have found him at all. Congrats on the nice buck.

Congrats on the buck. Man that stinks. The yotes got him. I've thought about sitting and waiting to hear them howl to find a deer?

With the coyote problem around here I would have a hard time leaving one overnight.

Congrats on a beautiful buck. You definitely did the right thing. If you want a shoulder mound, I would absolutely buy a cape for around 75-100$ from your taxidermist. I have my first buck with a bow done that way, and my biggest buck with a bow!

You did all you could under the circumstances. As has been mentioned, if you're interested in getting it mounted a good taxidermist can get you a new cape.

    Blessings......Pastorjim
