There's currently a huge fire south of Ely right now. As it stands our place looks ok, but it's approaching a portion of town fast! Please pray for everyone's safety! There are huge FS planes dropping water as I'm typing this.
Best of luck, Fitz! My area lost 35,000+ acres to wildfires back in mid-April. Thankfully, nobody was injured and it never threatened any homes.
Here's a quick video of a Forest Service dump plane flying over head. There are two of them making continuous runs from Shagwa Lake to the fire... FYI, I'm at my church printing the weekend's bulletin... not at the resort.
Prayers sent from here! Hope you guys stay safe! And praying for all the ff's too!! Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
Well, here's a bit of an update. We went to a town meeting last night at Vermilion Community College. At this point the fire is mostly contained, though crews have been at it all night and will continue throughout today. Fire started at a high wire. Seems a support broke and the line arced in several places starting the fire sometime around 14:30. It quickly grew do to the dry conditions and high winds. There were responses from 11 different townships, and over 44 assets were utilized including at one point 4 of the CL-215 water bombers that I was videoing. There were 3 water scooping helicopters and a sky crane out too. A total of around 260 acres had burned as of 1900 last night. 7 houses/cabins were with-in the burn, but all were saved! Only one 12'x12' shed burned. The portion of town that was evacuated was allowed to return last night. Fire has reached about 250 yards from those neighborhoods, but the quick work of all the air support halted the fire's progression. Power companies even had the lines back up by about 3 this AM. This was and unbelievable response. If they hadn't with such speed and force, I believe we would have lost a 1/4 of the city. Big thanks go out to all the folks that were working on the blaze!
