Lol. Last year when I was in chitcagoland I ate at Maggianos in Schaumburg. Which is good stuff but not exactly 'upscale'. Well, it's upscale for me.... but that's me. I also ate two different Lou's. I'd recommend Tsukasa of Tokyo. It's all the way up in Vernon Hills though. Great tepanyaki restaurant. (And I'm not just saying that because my friend owns it :D )
The sweet potato and blue cheese perogies sound damn good. So does the scallops and escargo. You can't beat wood grilled oysters!
I have a dear friend in central illinois who told me she never liked pizza until she ate some at Monical's. I had to tell her. "Then you still don't like pizza". Gah. Monical's serves ketchup or French dressing on a cracker and calls it pizza. Blasphemy!!! Here in Utah they have an annoying tendency to add pineapple to pizza. That's as wrong as turkey bacon.
I used to sell shi****o peppers up in crook county. Maybe some ended up at the yuppie food establishments.
the menu has changed since I had been there, but I remember having roasted cauliflower app oven roasted pig face with a sunny egg halibut and several other small plates that I can't remember exactly You people need to get out more.
"Pig face with a sunny egg" does not sound one bit appealing (I had to Google if it actually is pig face)... Roasted cauliflower was about the only thing that I think I could stomach haha. I'm not afraid to try new things, but that menu is just a bit too out there.
I have to agree with Hooker here. When I was a kid, many, many moons ago, when my father butchered hogs we treasured the heads as much as any other part of the hog. Pork jowls were made into the best bacon ever and the rest if the head was slow roasted and the meat was succulent. Sometimes my father split the skull to get the brains. He scrambled those with eggs... I could never find the appeal in that. Pig's heads used to be farmer food. Now it's haute. When I took Greasy the pig to the butcher, I had to special request the jowls. Otherwise they toss the whole head.
elk, the romantic weekend part will be enjoyed primarily at the pool and hot tub in room suite with wine and some relaxation sans kids. Chicago has nothing to do with our choice other than it's where this particular pool in room hotel is located. Since I plan to eat, I kinda have to stick with where I'm located. Yeah, I don't eat pizza anymore. Got sick last Super Bowl (year ago) from something wrong with a greasy pizza and haven't been able to smell or eat it since. Not by choice. I enjoy boring filet mignon with bernaise sauce, a side of garlic mashed potatoes, a salad, and a nice bottle of wine over pig face and sunny egg or octopus and beets or whatever else was on that menu.
About every other year I get to Chicago for business and 2 places that we always seem to hit are steak houses if that's your thing. Don't get me wrong, both places have other dishes that you can see online, but these places are good. Gene & Georgettis and Rosebuds (on Rush). For Steak, you are probably looking at 50-75 per person at either place. That's not really that bad tho.
I'd just find the nearest dark alley and conk a couple of rats over the head, take them back to the room and slow roast them bad boys in garlic. Probably the same thing as what you'll get at most of those restaurants anyway and a lot cheaper and probably organic.
For real adventure, hit the Austin or Garfield Park neighborhoods. http://heyjackass.com/2016-year-to-date-totals/
