I won't type out the long post that I wanted to last night after watching this movie. If some guys want to discuss the topic then I might. After watching this movie it really pisses me off that the likes of McGwire and Bonds have broken this record by using steriods. This coming from a die hard Cardinals fan. Overall, I thought it was a great movie and great directing on the part of Billy Crystal. I really had no idea of what the great Roger Maris went through with the ignorant Yankee fans that year as he and Mantle went on with the Battle Royale of being the homerun king. I also had no clue that the commisioner at the time honored the record with an asterix as he did not do it in the amount of games as Ruth did. A fine baseball movie it was and to see the interview with the Maris family after the movie discussing the emotions that they went through the year McGwire broke it was neat as well. I just wonder what they have to say today knowing that McGwire was on steriods when he did it. Anyone care to discuss?.....NYB, your thoughts?
One of my favorite sports movies. I DVR'd it a few months ago and watch it often. I was at Busch the night McGwire hit #62 and it was a really great moment in sports history.......at the time. Bonds then breaks it again, the juicing scandal, yada yada yada......now I wish they all the cheats would have choked at 60 hrs.
It's a great movie.. own it on DVD but haven't watched it in years. The whole Bonds and McGuire thing never really bothered me.. but then I always thought they were weenies anyway.
I do not like the idea that some players juiced, but how do we compare the players of the past with those of today. Plus body builders and strong men of the past were using "additives", so how can we ever prove that other sports figures were not? Not accusing, just consider it. For many years these growth hormones and steroids were not considered illegal. Now that they are we condemn a player that uses? Funny thing is for me, I do like to see HR's. But is a good at bat that I like more.
I know what your saying, but I highly doubt anyone in baseball was using steriods at that time. Amphetamines more than likely as it was a widely used drug from household wives to music preformers. Just really gets under my skin on what this whole steriod scandle did to a sport that I love. After watching the movie my whole conspiracy theory on Selig knowing and probably promoting the whole ordeal just grows in my head.
I've never been able to sit down and watch it start to finish yet, but have caught bits and pieces of it when it's on HBO. Really need to buy it so I can watch it when I actually have the time.
Real good movie..I collected baseball cards and quickly sold my McGuire rookie for 250.00 after he broke the record..glad I did because McGuire's record was broken bringing the price way down..with the internet / ebay drawing most collectors I quickly unloaded my cards for 1000.00 and stopped collecting. If the batter's { Mc Guire or Bonds ] was found guilty I don't think their records should count. I don't keep up with the news..so I don't know the whole story. ..and who am I anyway to make that call.LOL
