Finally saw my first buck last night tonight. And a nice one at that.

Finally saw my first buck last night. And a nice one at that.

I had a beautiful 8 point sprint within 10 yards of where I was sitting last night. I think he was late for a date because he was moving. When I first heard/spotted him he was only 30 yards away and running full speed right towards me. By the time I got my release on and my bow drawn back he was already out of range. I’m sure he also spotted me drawing my bow. I tried to stop him with a "mouth bleat" but he was heading somewhere and fast. I saw the whites of his eyes that is how close he was.

It's possible he winded me as he came from somewhat (not directly) downwind but why would he run towards the threat if that was the case? I just think he was chasing looking for does.

I was hunting from the ground which is somewhat of a long story but basically I have a stand hung along a fence line funnel. About ½ the time I sit in that stand I see a big doe and her twin fawns cross the fence line right at dusk and walk away from me. The big doe never presented a shot just her fawns in the past. Just bad luck basically. So I decided to change my luck by moving along the fence line so the deer would be walking towards me instead of away from me. There wasn’t a good place to hang a stand without a lot of trimming and I didn’t want to do that this time of year so I decided to sit on the ground along the fence line in the tall grass there.

Turns out this was another bad move because the does I was hoping for never showed up either night, and since this buck ran right past the tree stand I moved out of I would of spotted him earlier than I did when I was sitting on the ground and probably would have had a shot or at least a much greater chance of a shot.

We will keep trying. Next week they will be rutting hard and I will be in that tree stand for sure with a decoy out in front.

Anything is possible. Nobody hunts that farm from where he came from. But knowing the lay of the land and the neighbors habits I highly doubt it. The location where this buck popped would of been very strange to get bumped.
