JUST confirmed a hog hunt reservation for this spring. Shooting 3D, yesterday, I shot my round with a good friend and his two twin sons.....who told me they'd already booked their hunt, there. I'd already been trying to work this hunt in......and we worked it out for me to join them, there, last night. I have the opportunity to take a trophy boar and two pigs on this hunt. I'm gonna spot-and-stalk it........and hope for the best. Either way....it's another species and a new adventure. I'll take lots of photos. Any hog advice would be appreciated. I'm reading everything I can get my hands on, currently. http://www.hammondknives.com/hogs.html
Not much of an expert, but my first bow kill was a hog in cali. It was spot and stalk. They have excelent hearing and smelling, but their blind as bats. If one steps out on you, dont move for the stare down and they will soon assume their feeding etc. at which time you draw and then BBQ. Good luck on your hunt and take lots of pics for us to share in your experince.
Yeah, be sure if it is a grown boar that you "milk" him after you shoot him. Greatly improves the meat's taste quality.:D
Can't wait to hear the review of your hunt...spot and stalk, stick and string, too cool and good luck bro.
Something I for sure want to give a whirl this year myself. I've always wanted to, and even have a set of keys to a 1000 acres in AL covered in Hogs, just never have gone for some reason. That'll change this summer. Good luck and lay the smack down on them!
It sounds like a blast. The boss's son was going out in NC a few weeks back to try it. He lives in NC. It was spot and stalk also. Never heard back how it went. Maybe a piggy got him. LOL Looking forward to the pictures and report on your hunt. Good luck !! Tim
Good luck gmmat on the hunt. Myself and 8 others are hunting this saturday in southern oklahoma. I hope to have some good pics and video to post. This will be forst blood for the Maxxis.
Have fun. I got a buddy in Texas that keeps trying to get me to come down and hunt hogs. Unfortunately I've not been able to make it work out just yet. He really loves hunting those things, & I believe spot & stalk is about all he does.
Have fun. Stay down wind. Thier nose is better than a deer's. If its a big hog don't shoot the shoulder, below and behind the shoulder is what you want. Quartering away is a MUCH better shot than broadside. If you do get a big stinky nasty boar, soak the meat in ice water and salt for several days. Change the water daily. after 4-5 days it will be ready for your cooker and it will be just fine. I've whacked dozens of hogs over the past few years. It sure is FUN! After you hit one give it plenty of time to expire. If you want to see how fast you can run, walk up on a wounded, dying, pissed off boar hog!:D:D
See....that's the thing, Greg. Just how mean are these boars?.....lol Last place I looked into had a couple ** by the spot and stalk option. Bottom of the page was the disclaimer... **NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!!
They will run from you 99.44% of the time unless they are wounded. A wounded hog is much more likely to charge. Then theres that .56% :D That pig I killed with my recurve a few years ago charged me as soon as the first arrow hit it. I was lucky. It was a sow, and she couldn't move well with the arrow in her. I put a second arrow in her. it was an amazingly lucky shot, over her head and into her neck and severed her spine. She was 15 feet away when she dropped.
J, Heed Greg's advice, it is sound. Wind is critical. If the hogs have been hunted, they'll scatter the moment they smell you. Limit your movement as you approach-lower is better. You might want to consider wearing solid "pig color" clothing instead of camo. They are a herd animal and their gregarious nature can be exploited. Wind......in your face! Approach behind a black umbrella if they wide out in the open. Break a leg!
Definitely try to wait for that quartering away shot on a boar. I've never been charged, but I was always told to be mindful of the nearest tree just in case. Enjoy!
