Well if you read my earlier post, I've been in the woods for a week, every morning & evening hunting and have not seen one deer. So here's the story followed by a quesition and your opinions. Here's the story. Well this morning it finally happened. I hunt on about 30yds away from a fence line that leads to a dry creek bottom. I am in a blind on a slope about half way down to the creek. The deer jump the fence from an adjacent property & then head up along the fence. So at 645 this morning, I grunted & rattled a little bit. At 7 I have a 6 ptr come in right along the fence & jump onto my side. He's at 30yds & facing me. He stops & stares looking my blind over, then starts to head up the hill. He stops broadside at 25yds, and is eyeballing my blind again. I'm frozen at full draw so that I don't spook him & wise him up. But thanks to all of you, my standards have changed & decide not to take him, and pass on him. Normally he'd be meat in the freezer. He continues up & when he's about 5 yds up he stops again, turns to look at my blind & then doesn't like something so he bounds back to where he crossed the fence & heads out onto a field. He didn't snort, wheeze, smell the air or for that matter he didn't run out of there full bore as if I was busted. Here's the question: did he pick up a scent and wind me or was just uncomfortable with the blind? The mild wind was going in his direction after he passed me. I make an effort to use ddw spray on the blind. I tell you that I am just excited as if I had shot him. I've been skunked on seeing anything so this was really cool for me. Hopefully something bigger comes my way. What r your thoughts on why he took off?
I would say that he wasn't comfortable with your blind. If they recognize that something is different, it will often freak them out a little, but not like catching your wind. That's the primary reason that I don't use blinds. It's just so hard to get them concealed enough. That's my two cents worth.
Yeah, I'd probably say he didn't like something about the blind. Has it been there a while or did you just set it up that morning?
No I just set it up that morning. I have a fallen tree behind it, & a large tree next to it. Only two windows open, in front & the one on the left. I think maybe he seen me move as a shadow against the back drop of the window in front. I was sitting in the corner to prevent that. Hopefully it hasn't spooked him too much. I'm hoping to have time to use a stand there sometime. I will try to put some dead limbs in the space in front of the blind to offset it a bit more. It's a good spot because that's where they cross from one parcel into my area.
