I would love to get into filming my own hunts next season and I was just wondering what i need to do to get into it. What is the best camera for my money (Im a poor college student )? What do I need other than that to start out? I know a lot of yall on here do that and are good at it so I would like some advice. If I get good I would like to do some of the campbells outdoor challenge stuff. Thanks for the info!!
I have a cheap Sony 30gb Hard Drive camera. It works for what i need it to do, even though the quality isnt the greatest. I also have a camera tree arm that i use. And a camo tripod for turkey hunting. I find it easier to use a partner while filming.
Canon XHA1 Retales apprx:$1400 if you search around. I dont have one yet but will in the hopefully near future. Great optics, zoom, custom hand controls, low light capability. I have seen Drury Outdoors use them and the quality is outstanding. Did I mention it is also High Def!
I had a $150 Kodac easy share that I filmed a pig hunt with. Turned the thing on and set it on the stand in the video screen. Got the shot and the fall of the pig on it. If I wasn't such a computer noob, Id post it up. I'm thinking about getting an arm for that and start filming more. IDK...
The Sony HandyCam with the 30 gb harddrive is an awesome camera for the money. Couple that with a Gorilla camera arm for 30 bucks and you got yourself a nice little setup. That's the rig I use right now and it works just great.
I'm interested in taping my hunts too, but I'm a poor college kid as well. I think I'm just going to save my money and buy something nice rather than drop money now on something I won't be satisfied with. My Dad just bought a mini-camera that was on sale at the IL Deer and Turkey Classic that can mount on your bow or shotgun that films in high def that looked pretty nice but we'll see how that works come turkey season.
Those handycams run about 300 which isnt bad for a digital hd camera. Thats prob what ill do in the near future. Just not now because im broke!
XHA1 retails about double that? That aside, these are AMAZING cams...I am still learning all the ops of the one I film behind sometimes.
I have been thinking about this as well. Seeing is I am always alone and have no one to hunt with. It would be a good way to feel like I am in a tree with someone. lol Plus what better way to record a diary. I have a Sony HD 30gig I just dont recall if it makes noise when you turn it on. Yes it does but went into the meno and turned it off. I think I will try this.
The sony handi cam is what we use for our secondary shots and it is a pretty nice little camera to get yourself started with.. Walt
Oh Yea I remember in Full Circle when yall had to go back to the truck for it! HAHA! But seriously you and Tater had some good hunts!
I'm glad this was brought up. I want to begin filming as well. I see a lot of COOL things I wish I could share with someone else.
Even more than that isn't it? All, it really depends on what your looking for in your own videos. Are you looking strictly for home entertainment and online viewing? Are you looking for professional grade film "just in case" you get something for DVD/ TV? The answer to number one, all the cameras mentioned for HD cards, mini dvd etc....will make really good quality picture for online and personal entertainment. For TV/DVD you looking on spending some money, I wouldn't go less than a high end miniDV camera to high end HD miniDV cameras. MiniDV is the format most are using on television today. You looking at spending $1000's. Plus a very high end camera arm. This is my current setup, Canon GL and an arm from an online member that goes by PassThru.
Siman--I agree Rob's setup is very nice but I don't plan on spending that kind of dough (yet). So...what setup do you have there? Could you post a video or two so I can see the quality. Thanks!
My brother bought some special gun tape that's not supposed to damage the finish, The video quality is decent, but not HD. I upload all my videos to youtube so the quality gets destroyed. Ill put a few videos on photobucket to post in here later today.
This Simans Brother. I did the camo job on that camera with some camo gun tape from are local outdoor store. I was like 5.99 for ten feet of it. The tape works alright, it looks good but it is kinda a pain to do and the corners don't stick down that well.
I own a Roscoby, and it works great for filming your hunts when you go out on your own. It attaches right to your stabilizer, so there's no need to carry extra crap out with you into the woods. It's a little pricey ($350), but well worth it. If you want to see videos from the hunts go to Roscoby.com.
