Hey guys, i'm new to archery and the bow I recently purchased calls for 28 1/2" arrows with a 400 spine and 125 grain field tips. I've sighted in the bow and put approx. 300 arrows down range. I've been looking at broadheads for hunting season ( white tail ) and it seems like most mechanical broadheads are 100 grain. Would this be ok to use or should I stick with the recommended weight like my field tips? thanks for the help, Ty
Keep the same weight between field points and broad heads. Different weights will change the point of impact. Your accuracy will be off.
Thanks! That's kind of what I was expecting the answer to be but it's great to get some reassurance before I go out and make a choice. Is the a brand of 125 grain broadheads I should be looking for?
Asking the best BH is like asking best flavor ice cream. I have bow hunted since 1975. I will never have a mechanical in my arrows again. With today's high quality, no creep string materials and building processes, along with tunable bows, I see no need for a mechanical. And I shot maybe 15 deer with them. The last one I had looked like a wrinkle pop can with a bent ferrule, broken blades and bent tip. Then I learned how to tune my bow & went to a sharp, durable, fixed BH. QAD Exodus or NAP Hellrazors on my arrows. Made in USA too.
Take the quick questionnaire in the link. This will give you a good starting point. https://www.realtree.com/bowhunting/broadhead-selector
Thanks, yeah I know it's like asking the best car brand but I'm just looking for some good options. I was looking into mechanical because I heard they fly better ( more like field points ) but you make a good point about the bow tuning I may be better off with a good cut on contact fixed broadhead
Back to your original post - there's no bow that calls for a particular weight of field point or broadhead. Most people are shooting 100 grain tips with no problem. In most cases people only shoot 125 grains if they want a little added weight on their arrow for slightly better penetration or if they're on the line in terms of arrow spine (stiffness). A 400 spine arrow is pretty average given a 28.5" arrow and assuming you're shooting 60-70 lbs I doubt there's any 'need' for a 125 grain field tip. I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and say 90%+ of archers are shooting 100 grain heads. IMO you'd be better off switching to 100 grain field tips, sighting your bow in, and having a MUCH wider selection of broadheads to pick from. If the time comes when you want to add more weight to the front of your arrow there's plenty of options to achieve that while still shooting 100 grain heads.
That's true I'm just going by what my local archery shop told me I should be using. It is a 62lb draw and a 26" length of pull. You're right there does seem to be a larger selection of 100 grain broadheads out there and if it's just a matter of re sighting the bow may be I'll go in that direction. I'm just trying to find out what will give me the best chance out there. I'm a huge fan of the YouTube channel thanks for the help!
Just my 0.2, but if you want to do a mechanical, I would try the rage hypodermic +p. It’s better for guys with lower draw weights or shorter draws. Mechanicals are significantly easier to “tune” and what I mean by that is basically just screw it on and head to the woods. If you wanted to try a fixed blade, the qad exodus mentioned earlier is solid as well as magnus stingers. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I start out by paper tuning my bow and with FMJs my Answer does not like 125 pts. I shoot Slick Trick ViperTrick 100 and they are lethal. The popularity of mechanical heads is that your bow doesn’t have to be fine tuned for them to shoot. Grad a couple different weight points and tune your new bow, then worry about the broadhead.
No one has posted the cliche so I will Even a field tip can kill if placement is correct. That being said, try them all and decide through experiences.
I shoot grave digger chiseled tips in 125 gr and have had great luck with them. G5 montecs too Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
