Hey guys, I want to know your preference on feather cuts. Do you think one is quieter or faster than the other?? I think shield looks cooler, but the round just looks more aerodynamic. I am making arrows for a high performance hunting compound, and I just wanted to hear some opinions on feather size and cuts. Thanks for your help!!

PS--I plan on using mechanical and/or fixed blade heads.

I use shield cut on my arrows. I'm shooting big old heads on a heavy arrow coming out of my Longbow! They do the job and your right, they look cool as well!

When I shot feathers I used the round 4" Gateway feathers in the camo red/black or orange/black combo. They flew great but I never tried the shield cut so not sure which would fly better. Do you have any local pro shops that could work with you on your combo?

I use parabolic feathers but I am sure the shield cut is just as good. If they are the same size I don't think either one would perform better. Personal preference as to which one looks better.

The latest is the "razor feather". It is only about 1 1/2 long and weighs about 1.3 grains each. I don't think I will go that small/light with a hunting bow shooting well over 300 fps. However, they do advertise a PSE X-Force shooting these over 318 fps. A lot changes when a fixed blade is involved, and some sacrificed speed really pays off considering long-range accuracy.

The only notable difference I have seen, when shot from a compound bow, is the parabolics don't whistle as much. But it's negligable. Shield cut looks better, IMO.

I use the Rayzr feathers and I love them. They look awesome IMO and they are excellent at keeping broadheads stable.

OKbowhunter, I am curious about your setup. How fast are you shooting and what range do you practice at??

My bow is set at 63 lbs and I have a 27" draw length. I practice from 10-50 yards on the regular.
My setup is pretty light as far as weight and draw length, I'm certainly not smoking arrows.

I have no idea how fast my bow is shooting, definatly not past 300 fps though.

If you have any more question, ask away. I'm not sure how specific you want me to be.

Thanks, you answered my question for me. I am just a little nervous about putting the small razors on my arrows because I'm probably going to be shooting about 310-320 fps. Maybe I'll try them on a few in the future, but for now my gut is telling me to play it safe (4" parabolic feathers).

I am not 100% sure but I think I have read where people got similar results from the rayzrs and blazers. I think they are supposed to perform pretty similar.

bowhunter546, I honestly think your arrow flight would be just fine, but go with whatever makes you comfortable. A mental issue can hinder alot more than a mechanical issue.
