Favre released by Jets, free to sign with any team

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr. – 56 minutes ago
NEW YORK (AP) — Brett Favre was released from the reserve-retired list by the New York Jets on Tuesday night, making the quarterback a free agent if he decides to again come out of retirement.
When Favre was dealt to New York from Green Bay in August, there were conditions in the trade that required the Packers to be compensated if the Jets moved the three-time MVP. Those no longer apply if he signs elsewhere.
The 39-year-old Favre, who spent one disappointing season with New York, had requested the move several weeks ago through agent Bus Cook, but insisted he has no plans to come out of retirement for a 19th season.
"Nothing has changed," Favre said in a statement. "At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football."
Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum also said Favre had not indicated to him any desire to come back.
That, of course, won't stop any of the likely speculation that Favre could end up with any number of teams, especially if the torn biceps tendon that hampered him for much of last season has healed.
After 16 seasons with the Packers, Favre had a tearful retirement in March 2008, but decided to return to football a few months later. Green Bay had already moved forward, anointing Aaron Rodgers the starter as a bitter falling out with Favre ensued.
The Packers traded him to the Jets, injecting excitement into a franchise that hasn't been to a Super Bowl since 1969. Things started off promising as Favre played well and the Jets took over first place in the AFC East, with a playoff run in their sights. But Favre struggled down the stretch with the arm injury as the Jets finished 1-4 and failed to make the playoffs, costing coach Eric Mangini his job.
Favre announced his retirement on Feb. 11, saying he was done with football — this time for real.

    Yes, only 39,

And still better then 75% of the league's QB's when healthy (The Jets were 8-4 and in first place when he injured his arm last year, dont forget that).

I bet at least a dozen teams would sign him.

Just seems like he should be older than that. I like Favre, I'd love to see him as the Rams QB. Anyone care to take that over paid primadonna named Marc Bulger off of the Rams hands?:d

I just saw this on Yahoo sports. IDK I guess he would be better than TJack for sure. 1 Million 1 year contract with a winning incentive. Vikes are a win now team right now we just don't have a QB. Besides packer fans would hate it.

I would love to see him go to the Viqueens. Just to PO the Packers. Don't get me wrong I'm a huge Packer fan but I hate Ted Tompson and his puppet Mike McCarthy.Go Brett:d

I disagree, I doubt 3 teams would sign him! No one wants the drama! I REALLY hope he signs with the Vikings so he can come to Green Bay and throw a few more interceptions! That would be awesome!

I'm a viking fan and based on what I saw his last 4-5 games last season he should stay retired. If his arm were healthy and didn't need surgery I might have a different opinion.

Do some of the guys who rip on TJACK so much realize he had a 95 passer rating last year?

I'm not saying he's great or anything because he isn't...but he is certianly not the worst and has only started about 16 games in his young career. He had a bad playoff game last season but so did a lot of other qb's...Delhomme and Ely Manning come to mind.

    Pass Efficiency Ratings 2008

    T. Jackson QB, MIN 95.4
    P. Manning QB, IND 95.0
    A. Rodgers QB, GNB 93.8
    M. Schaub QB, HOU 92.7
    Tony Romo QB, DAL 91.4
    J. Garcia QB, TAM 90.2
    M. Cassel QB, NWE 89.4
    Matt Ryan QB, ATL 87.7
    Shaun Hill QB, SFO 87.5
    S. Wallace QB, SEA 87.0
    E. Manning QB, NYG 86.4
    D. McNabb QB, PHI 86.4
    Jay Cutler QB, DEN 86.0
    T. Edwards QB, BUF 85.4
    J. Delhomme QB, CAR 84.7
    J. Campbell QB, WAS 84.3
    D. Garrard QB, JAC 81.7
    B. Favre QB, NYJ 81.0
    Joe Flacco QB, BAL 80.3
    K. Collins QB, TEN 80.2
    B. Roethlisberger QB, Pit 80.1

Actually, Phillip Rivers led the league with a 105+ rating, and Jackson only started 5 games! Gimme a break, he sucks :d

Jackson may not be horrible, but I'd say if you asked Todd McShay, Mel Kiper or someone like that to do a draft of last years starting QBs Jackson would probably be in the bottom 4. I think he threw 9 TDs in 8 games played and only threw for 132 yards per game against defenses with 8 men in the box trying to stop the Adrian Peterson. I'm not that familiar with the Vikings receiving corps, but hopefully with the addition of Mercy Percy they'll be able to get the ball out a little more and give Peterson some room between the tackles. Only time will tell I suppose:d

He started 5 games and played the second half of another with about 190 yards per start with 9 touchdowns and only 2 picks. In a road game against the Cardinals he was NFC offensive player of the week.

What is your basis for saying he is the worst quarterback in the NFL? Because he started only 5 games? What difference does that make?

Who cares that Phillip Rivers led the league in passer rating? I was showing how many qb's had a lesser passing ratings.

He started five and only played the second half of another? According to: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9650 he accumulated stats in 8 games. I didn't pay attention to the Tennesse game there, that skewed the statistics I showed there, but then again when it comes to recording a QBs stats it doesn't matter if they play 5 snap or 50 it still goes in the book as a game played. I enjoy watching the Vikings play, Peterson is a monster, hopefully Jackson will be able to step up his game and carry them further next year than this past year.
