..of any genre? We've discussed guitarists and favorite music, so what about that singer who you believe has the most unique vocals. The one that, when you turn on the radio and hear a song, you immediately recognize it simply by the person's voice.

For me, I have three people.

First my infatuation with Guns N' Roses continues with Axl Rose. He may not sound "pretty" but the man can sing, his voice in incomparable.

Johnny Cash- His deep, melancholy voice is timeless.

James Hetfield of Metallica- Like Rose, his voice just sticks out and it is so deep and resonates so strongly that I can never turn down a Metallica song. "Nothing Else Matters" is a perfect example I think.

I should also throw in couple from the fairer sex as well.

Jennifer Nettles- regardless if you think Sugarland is "real" country or not, you can't deny she has a strong voice. I can see how it would annoy some people, but I love it.

Alicia Keys- She too has a strong voice that I can always pick out. She also plays the piano while singing which I think is just incredible.

I'm sure more from both genders will come to me as the discussion progresses.. :)

Freddie Mercury - Queen (probably the best ever)
    Geoff Tate - Queensryche
    Chris Cornell - Soundgarden

    +1 on Freddie Mercury.

Also from the hip-hop genre, I'll throw in Common. He's one of the few rappers I can tolerate anymore, but he has a very distinct voice.

Amy Lee (Evanessance) Her voice is phenominal to me
    Sara Evans

After them, you can probably pick any one from Nettles, Keyes, or Martina McBride

I'll second what Ryan said with Amy Lee, her voice is just amazing.

Along those same lines is Lacey Mosley of flyleaf, she has a very different sound plus she is HOT!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ltwv-s1Or9w

Lane Staley of Alice In Chains is another

Here is another "off the wall" pick... how about all of the guys from Boyz II Men those guys are incredibly talented no matter if you like the genre or not... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnbdCzXtb6o

    Man....what a great question...

Forst off...I'm partial to singer/songwriters who write ans sing "1st person". People like Jackson Browne; James Taylor; Bruce Springsteen; et. al. don't have the "best" singing voices, but they make up for it with THEIR stories.

For female country, there's no equal to Martina McBride. Best pipes in her (and maybe ANY) genre. Close second might be Wynona Judd.

Stevie Nicks......because of the singer/songwriter thing. The lady sat down and wrote Rhiannon and Landslide in the same hour. Unbelievable.

BIG fan of Glen Phillips (formerly of Toad the Wet Sprocket).

Bluegrass.....(my all-time favorite) has 3 that stand out (IMO):
    1. John Cowan
    2. Dan Tyminski (best PURE bluegrass voice, ever - IMO)
    3. Alison Krauss

    All genres....in no particular order......
    1. Bon Scott
    2. Freddy Mercury
    3. Lane Staley (Alice in Chains)
    4. Paul McCartney
    5. Mick Jagger
    6. Phil Collins (guess Genesis should have let him sing, sooner, huh?)
    7. Paul Stanley (personal opinion!)
    8. Aretha Franklin
    9. Gladys Knight
    10. Michael Jackson (credit where due)

ya know, I love hendrix, but not as a vocalist... he's ok, but he's not famous cuz he can sing...

and kurt cobain? really?? his vocals sounds like he's pushing out a log most of the time... fits his music fine but i couldn't even include him in the top 25 inside the rock genre, and even inside the subset of grunge/seattle sound I think Chris Cornell and Lane Staley were both much much better...

Were doomed to never agree Sevenmag ;)

BTW, This LIST is about our favorites, not the best :D

I have no problem saying Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell are better vocalists. No problem whatsoever.

Behold possibly the GREATEST grunge song ever recorded:
