I use a 30-06. By far with the right setup I can out shoot a 270 up to 600 yds. I have more experience with this caliber too so thats what I stick too
Marlin 35 Remington. So far only rifle I've hunted with and worked well so will call it favorite. After picking up a bow I don't think I'll put much effort into rifle anymore, might just have it for certain times if doesn't work to get out with the bow.
I am strictly bow, but I have been invited to a couple of outing where they used dogs. More social and really goodguys, so I picked up a cheap pump action 12ga that was on sale for under 200.00 @walmart so that I can join them a couple timeslate season and perhaps take my sons... Prob more for home defense than hunting.
Deer aren't hard to kill if you hit them right. I've killed them with everything from a .223 Remington to a hot loaded .45-70 and all sorts of stuff in between. I've sorta settled on the .308 Winchester as a nice compromise general purpose cartridge.
I have a Browning Cynergy O/U in MODB with a 3.5in chamber. With the right slugs and chokes would this be a suitable firearm for deer?
It would work but ure range would be limited with a smooth bore even choked....take a trip to the range and see what it does...u can always pick up a rifled slug shotgun fairly cheap to then ure range would be more than enough Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Just the typical .308. Cheap to shoot, plentiful ammo(or it used to be) and does the job at the typical distances in the Pa woods.
I have a 270 WSM and love the gun, but ammo is expensive and you can't just walk in and get it anywhere like you can w. 30/30 or 30-06. My next long gun will be a .308 on an AR platform.
I'm shooting a Savage 30-06 with 150gr & I am planning on buying a Marlin 30-30 as well..The 30-06 is good for reaching out over 100 yards out while a 30-30 is more suited for short distance hunting which is mostly what we end up with around here. You guys who are forced into using shotguns with slugs, how much damaged or unusable meat does it cause? I have heard stories of 12 slugs basically cutting a deer in half, never seen it in person though.
Shotgun slugs don't cut deer in half. A slug through the shoulder or ham is going to mess up meat for sure, but no more than any other deer caliber. (in fact in many cases it will do less damage because the slug has less 'shock')
