I know this isn't bowhunting but I was curious if any of you hunt with firearms and what your preferred caliber is. I hunt in ohio so I use a muzzleloader and 12- gauge slug.
I just got a tikka lite in 300 win mag. A bunch of people told me that it would beat the snot out of me but it kicks less than my 12ga Remington 870 with Remington accutip slugs. That's what I used for gun season in IL.
H&R ultra slug hunter 20 gauge and hornady sst slugs. Knight muzzleloader .45 disc extreme, Savage 25-06, Stevens 7mm-08. Those are my for Iowa(first two) and Missouri(last two.)
I'm not a gun hunter really at all, but I prefer my .50 cal muzzleloader (T/C Impact).....just picked up a .44magnum lever though last year...may need to use it once.
For long distance I use a 30-06 savage, for drives or hunting in thick stuff I use a 35 marlin. But i haven't shot a deer with a gun in two years. I mostly use it if I'm invited to a friends place that has stands set for guns and a bow isn't possible. If I ever go on an elk hunt I will use my 30-06.
In PA bear season I like my 300 ultra mag, Pa deer season I take out my inline muzzeloader and my .41 for the fun of it and in Ohio I use 870 and sst, but hopefully I won't even take the guns out if my archery season goes as planned.
Really love my .30.30 shooting Hornady Leverevolution 160 grain and my Mossberg 835 shooting 3 1/2" Copper coated #1 Buckshot
270 is best all round for any animal in North America. I sold my tikka t3 and now have a browning blr in 270wsm it didn't come in 270. Ill shoot moose all day with it.
I hunt big cutovers during rifle season so my gun of choice is 300 wheatherby mag when hunting a more wooded area with closer shots i choose my Browning BAR 30-06 or Marlin 30-30.
Either my 30-06, or my other 30-06 For black powder I have a TC and shoot 100gr of loose 777 behind a 250gr sst.
I really like my old Marlin 30-30, also enjoy shooting my 45-70 but I tend to kill more with the 30-30.
