What would you recommend for a first coumpound bow setup? I am 45 years old and my son is 11 years old. We have never bow hunted, we are new to the sport. Any info would be helpful.
    Thanks Terry and Brad.

Go shoot every bow you can get your hands on. Bowtech has 3 bows for around $600 completely set up. They are called the assassin, heartbreaker, and soldier. The assassin looks sweet. Let the bow pick you though. What I like could feel horrible for you.

go to your local archery shop and shoot some bows, find out your draw lenghts and what draw weights you both like, then you can search the classifieds like ebay and others, theres a buy sell trade section here too. some great deals can be found in the classifieds. if your unsure if something is a good deal or good equipment you can ask ppl here for help too

Your best bet... go to your local archery shop or a couple. If you have friends who shoot bow... talk to them. See if they would let you shoot some bows and show you the proper form for shooting to get you started. Not only are you learning something new... trying to teach your son at the same time could be very flustrating. You want to keep it fun for yourself and more so for him if you what to succeed in your quest.

Find someone who can show you the ropes that is knowledgeable. It will make it so much easier and a lot more fun.

My son and I are starting out this year as well, on spring turkeys. He has chosen to go with the shotgun for those, and work on his bow after the season. I pick my bow up Friday (got a sweet deal on a 2010 Hoyt Maxxis 31) and I can't wait. The local pro shops were very helpful to me, a lot of good advice from people who know. Good luck guys!

Great to hear you were able to find a bow that you're happy with. It can never be stressed enough just how important it is to have a bow fit you well. It will greatly improve not just your accuracy and ability to shoot the bow, but the enjoyment you get from it as well.

Good luck to both you and your son this spring and beyond!

There are a ton of good starter bows out. Bear, PSE, Diamond, etc.

Take your time, don't get in a hurry and let the bow choose you! :)
