Anyone ever clean up algae bloom and cattails in a farm pond ? The prop I have has some overgrown algae bloom and is over run with cattail. I have seen natural liquids that will help clear the algae out. Anyone have experience with this?

Good luck with the cattail battle impossible to wipe out. how big is the wetland? How deep is the water, what is the bottom like?

It’s around 10 ft deep and about a 3/4 acre pond. I don’t mind he cattails it’s only off the one side. The algae and water clarity is the real issue. It’s spring fed as well and when it rains it gets muddy. Haven’t been in the pond but I imagine it’s a mud bottom. Was considering using AirMax Pond Clear.

A fountain usually helps with algae

If you want to really do it right hire a pond management company. We hired one at the wildlife club i am a member of and in the 3-4 years we’ve had them it’s made an enormous difference. Algae is completely gone and the fishing has gone from being mediocre at best to really good. Got some monster cats and the bass are really starting to get up there in size. They aren’t too expensive either, like $1k per year plus another $200-300 for chemicals. I think the first year was a little more for chemicals since it was in such bad shape but it really has made a night and day difference. The name of the company is Southern pond management. Not sure if they are a chain/national company or just local but I am sure there are companies that do it everywhere

I would rather have cattails than ruined pond banks.

Back when I worked fire the base was at a wildlife management area, They had pole barns full of toys I would love to play with. One machine they had was basically a shallow water barge with a big ass diesel engine on the deck they turned 3 substantial heavy duty blades. It was pretty much a snowblower for cattails, it was loud, it was messy. I only got to see it operate one time but what it did it to cattails was amazing it was like a juicer that cut ground and thru the debris you could cut 6' channels in 2 passes thru a wall of cattails.

You could spray a round up type liquid. Just need to add some dawn dish soap as a surfacant.

I bought some stuff called Shore Clear at Tractor Supply before WI decided to outlaw it. Worked well in the areas I used it.

Just went to town on the pond, added some live enzymes that are supposed to eat algae and some spray on for the cattail. I’m in over my head, time will tell. Nothing that can harm it so will see what happens, going least invasive route first. Contacted a company and the guy was way too pumped to come out and tackle the algae, I’m still in winter mode. Maybe I’ll give em a try when I wake up a lil.

The bottom sludge do not address until the water temp is 55 degrees for the enzymes.

He wants to get it on it quick so it’ll be ready in time for him to sell you some fish when their fish wagon comes through to stock the ponds in your area.
