Starting new plot in large open bottom that has tall heavy dead grass. Should i just turn grass under that is already dead from no water? How would you suggest working the soil on a new plot before seeding? I will have farm equipment. Thanks for your help.

I would brush hog the field, then you could till the field up w. the grass, but if you are tilling, the grass will need to be chopped up pretty good or else it will get wrapped up around your tines. If you don't have a tiller and you are just disking, you might think about raking off the top duff to make disking easier. I have used a box blade to do this pretty well.

My preference would be to clean the field off w. the box blade, then use a tiller w. about 2 passes to get the soil nice and fluffy. Then, it depends on what you are planting. You may need to firm the seed bed before seeding, or you may not, depending on the type of seed. Then generally the best method to get seed to soil contact is with a cutlipacker, but a drag harrow or some type of homemade drag will also get the job done.
