I've heard people say when you purchase tires for a 4 wheel drive vehicle you should purchase four new tires instead f just two for example. I am an idiot and don't understand why that might be true.

I need two front tires but my rear tires still have good tread. Would I be good just replacing the front two?

    Thanks guys.

I wouldnt buy 4 unless you need 4. I see no harm in just getting 2.

Haven't ever heard that and I've only ever owned 4x4 trucks. Only thing I've been told is new tires go on back or which ever is drive tires but who knows. If I didn't need all four to be new I wouldn't by four.

with an all-wheel drive vehicle the gearing has to match front to back. with a 4x4 vehicle the only time it will matter is when it is in 4 wheel drive mode. if only 2 tires are worn, you will be fine only replacing 2

It might make a difference when you go to rotate them is my thought.

It won't hurt anything to buy just the two. You just have to always have the same size all the way around. That may be what they meant. With today's tires they usually just swap front to back so it won't hurt when rotating either. I always put the better tires on front so that my steering tires are my best. Just my .02 worth.

Ok cool. I'm just going to get two new ones for the front. My back two are good.

I believe it wears on the 2 new tires more if you have 2 new ones. It'll work, it just takes down the life span of the new ones, I wouldn't doubt that it wears down faster with AWD. I dont think it is just limited to 4x4 vehicles.
